Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series Consoles

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. hit PCs earlier this year and offered up the best overall version of the long-running game yet. Debuting in January of 2025, this incarnation brought all the prior content into the mix alongside new content to make it a fresh experience for veteran players as well. This revamp brought with it a big uptick in visual quality alongside rollback support for online play, and coming soon, full cross-play between platforms as R.E.V.O. goes from PC exclusive to console when it hits Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles later this year.
The announcement marks the first time the franchise has been multi-platform for a release on day one for consoles, with prior standalone releases all being staggered across different platforms over time. When R.E.V.O. first hit PC, it seemed odd for it to not get a console release alongside it. VF5 as a whole did get re-released via the Ultimate Showdown version on PS4 and PS5, so maybe the announcement was held off a bit to avoid hurting that version’s sales. It’s also possible that they wanted to wait until Switch 2 was officially announced.
Caged Heat
The Switch 2 release will mark not only the first time a Virtua Fighter game gets a standalone release on a Nintendo console, but the first fully-fledged entry created for portable hardware as well. Having VF5 on the go is fantastic as shown by being able to play it on the ROG Ally with ease too, but Switch 2’s controller may prove to be more comfortable for portable play. This is the best version of VF5 yet, which has gone from being under-released in some ways to now having more versions out than any prior entry in the series. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is the smoothest-playable version of possibly the greatest entry in the franchise’s 30 year history.

The franchise has always been a personal favorite of mine and it’ll be interesting to see how well it does on consoles once again. The PC release being done so much earlier may wind up hurting it a bit or we’ll see the franchise grow to a new heights with this release. It’s been a major one in gaming before it fell off a bit in popularity and Tekken claimed the top spot for 3D fighters, but the rivalry has always made each franchise better.
Suplex City
Alongside the announcement of this release was the announcement that the Virtua Fighter Open Championship tournament will start on Friday,May 23 at Combo Breaker 2025. Players have a chance to win the grand prize of $100,000. Unfortunately, Sega didn’t announce when the console versions of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. will be released, but we’ll keep a close eye on it as time goes on.
