Review: Doom: The Dark Ages
Id Software’s foray into the Slayer’s medieval past may be the franchise’s most entertaining installment yet.
You’re probably playing it right now as you’re reading this. Like with every new DOOM release, it’ll be hard to put down, it’ll be hard to forget, and it’ll probably be hard to finish. However, if you tire from ripping and tearing demons, these other games might help quell your lust for violence.

Atomic Heart
DOOM Meets Bioshock
Set in a retro-futuristic Soviet Union during the 1950s, what was supposed to be a utopia has turned into an apocalypse. Machines have gone rogue, killing everything in sight. With hostile robots and twisted plant monsters running amok, it’s up to P-3 to stop the chaos and apprehend the one responsible. Atomic Heart is a strange but interesting game. It shares some similarities with the first Bioshock but replaces capitalism with communism.
The game is by no means perfect, and the combat can range from challenging to frustrating. Atomic Heart is one of those games where the beginning levels are the hardest until you start upgrading. However, the visuals are gorgeous, and the Russian setting remains unique and captivating. Plus, Atomic Heart’s soundtrack shares much in common with DOOM because one of its composers is legendary music creator Mick Gordon. You’ll know which tunes are his when your blood starts pumping.

Cyberpunk 2077
Do Whatever It Takes to Become a Legend
Take a trip into the dark and gritty future of Night City. In Cyberpunk 2077, you’re known as V, a mercenary whose poor decisions have landed you in trouble, and now you have a chip in your head that’s slowly killing you. In a city infested with megacorps, street thugs, killers, and assassins, your search for a solution will turn you into a legend. How you get there, however, is your choice.
It might be a first-person RPG, but there are enough broken builds to turn your character into a Cyberpunk version of the Doom Slayer. The amount of weapons, augmentations, and abilities you unlock offers enough content for multiple playthroughs. Add in the unforgettable plot, interesting characters, rocking soundtrack, and a breathtaking expansion, and Cyberpunk 2077 is perfect for DOOM players looking for a balance between gameplay and story.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
Modern Boomer Shooter
This first-person shooter looks and plays like someone dug up an old PC game from the ‘90s and remade it for a modern system. Set in the Warhammer 40K series, you’re a Space Marine sent to planet Graia to battle Chaos Cultists, Chaos Space Marines, and Chaos Daemons. To summarize, there’s a lot of chaos in this game.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is good old-fashioned FPS fun with a sprite art style. However, don’t assume the game is as stiff and janky as an old shooter. The combat can get fast and intense as you enter large arenas front-loaded with enemies. Blast them with your array of guns, or get in close and cut them down with your chainsword. Each level also comes with secrets and power-ups to turn you into a true chaos hunter.

RoboCop: Rogue City
“Scrapyard Or Prison, Creep?”
In one of the best movie-licensed games of this generation comes RoboCop: Rogue City. The streets of Detroit are overflowing with crime and corruption, and the only one who can serve the public trust and uphold the law is RoboCop. If you love games where you play as action icons, you can’t get more iconic than the ultimate half-man, half-machine, all cop.
Is the game perfect? It unfortunately suffers from bugs here and there, with occasional hiccups in the audio. Is it an utter blast to play? Absolutely. Story-wise, Rogue City feels like the perfect sequel to RoboCop 2 as you investigate OCP and a crook who may be linked to RoboCop’s past. However, where Rogue City excels is in the gameplay and violence. It packs a punch, and you feel it. Every weapon has power, and the damage you cause to criminals and the environment is all just satisfying. Highly recommended.

Wolfenstein: The New Order
“They Built a New World, But They Forgot About Me”
They may not be demons, but they’re just as vile. Wolfenstein: The New Order is a messed-up world. The Nazis have conquered every free nation on Earth, but the war is far from finished. B.J. Blazkowicz has returned, and he’s bringing back every gory trick he knows to remind them why he was the feared Nazi-slayer.
If you love challenge and satisfying weaponry, The New Order has enough of both. Be silent, be creative, be unstoppable, just be whatever it takes to get the job done and make the Nazis pay. If you need another reason to play this game after DOOM, then remember that both DOOM and Wolfenstein are technically linked. Because if you believe the bizarre canon, B.J. Blazkowicz is the great-grandfather of the Doom Slayer. Seems fighting evil runs in the family.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
It Has Mechs with Chainsaws
Want a game with a deeper focus on massive mechs duking it out? From the same game designers who brought you Dark Souls comes the long-awaited sequel to the iconic mecha series. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon takes place in the ruined world of Rubicon 3. With machines and factions vying for control and domination, you will undertake missions that will impact the fate of Rubicon.
Yes, you get to build and customize your own mech, and not just with guns and missiles. You also have a set of melee weapons, and for the DOOM players out there, that includes a chainsaw. Not only is the combat, destruction, and explosives amazing, but the game truly gives you a sense of scale as the locations and machines look and feel massive. Which only complements the battles when you and another mech face off.
