Stalact Boss Guide in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Stalact Boss Guide in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Upon entering Monoco’s Station in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you will encounter one of the best characters in the entire game. This charming brute has a long history with Verso and has some of the best interactions with our newly appointed protagonist. With that said, this guide is not for his short battle, but the one following it. Stalact decides to ruin the little reunion between the two characters, but offers a quick and important lesson that introduces the equivalent of a limit break for each individual character.

Stalact Moveset

Attack

Description

Stalact creates earthquakes.

This is a three-part jump attack that can easily punish Stalact. The first two are fairly quick, while the last will need a second before pulling the trigger.

Stalact performs a combo.

This is a four-hit combo that has a surprisingly slow reaction time. Its pattern rhythm is slow all around.

Strategy

Throughout the fight, the Stalact will swap between a fire stance and an ice stance. This will only ever happen whenever a character strikes Stalact’s weakpoint. To tell which stance Stalact is in, look at his glowing body. If it’s red, it’s in fire stance, and it’s weak to ice. If it’s blue, it’s in its ice stance and is weak to fire attacks.

Stalact’s combo is probably the biggest pain in the fight, only because its windup at the beginning is deceptively slow. While the follow-up hits are fairly well telegraphed, the first head swing is something that needs to get used to. The best tell is to look at its front left leg and watch for it to move forward before parrying.

The earthquake attack can be both a pain and a benefit only because of the boss’ element. Each jump attack allows you to attack with the entire party, but there’s a better-than-average chance that one or more characters will have an ice-element weapon. Because of this, if Stalact is in its ice form, it will absorb and heal with this attack on those characters.

Outside of this, you should still try to Burn Stalact while applying Defencelesss and slow on it whenever possible. It’s a fairly short fight with only a couple of attacks, but it does introduce the most important aspect: Gradient attacks.

Monoco will introduce you to Gradient attacks. While we’re used to Gradient parries at this point, Gradient attacks are unique abilities each character has in their arsenal (which can be expanded upon as you build relationships). Each Gradient attack relies on a specific number of Gradient Charges stored up, which are charged by using abilities that cost AP. Best yet, they don’t act as a character’s turn, so you’re able to follow up with an attack right after that.
