Despite being a major franchise, sales of Warhammer video game adaptations have never set the world on fire. However, that changed with the release of Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, the best-selling adaptation of Games Workshop’s expensive miniature war game.

The game’s success has led to years of post-launch support and a quickly-announced sequel, but the fervour for the one game led to a massive boost in sales for other games in the Warhammer series.

Space Marine 2 led to more Warhammer sales

Speaking to PCGamer, developers from Warhammer 40K: Darktide studio Fatshark and Rogue Trader’s Owlcat both admitted that the launch of Saber’s game resulted in a surge in sales across the board.

“We definitely saw a boost in player numbers after Space Marine 2″, Darktide narrative lead Mike Knight told the outlet. “It makes sense, people play a game and like it, so they look around for something else that’s similar.”

Additionally, Rogue Trader brand manager Anton Emelianov explained that the franchise is very symbiotic, explaining that when “one Warhammer game does well, it lifts the others”.

“We saw a noticeable uptick in interest around Rogue Trader when Space Marine 2 launched—people wanted to explore the setting further, often in different genres,” the developer of the Baldur’s Gate-like CRPG said.

Alongside the boost in popularity of other games, the success of Saber’s game also led to a huge spike in sales for physical Warhammer stores selling the tabletop miniatures.

Emelianov explained that the hype for Space Marine “reinforced what we already believed: Warhammer has a huge and ever-growing audience, and there’s plenty of room for new stories within the setting. While our games are very different—and CRPGs are often seen as more of a niche genre—the success of Space Marine 2 is inspiring and motivates us to keep raising the bar.”

As a series that has been around for decades, Warhammer is currently at its peak. With an Amazon Prime series in the works, multiple games in development and a spike in sales, the franchise is currently bigger than ever.
