What are the Hardest Boss Fights in Resident Evil Games?

Over nearly 30 years of containing zombie outbreaks, Resident Evil protagonists have had to face some of the worst monsters imaginable. Unsurprisingly, some of these monstrosities are quite difficult to put to rest.

From mansions to mutant villages, these Resident Evil games showcase the franchise at its terrifying, action-packed and atmospheric best.

Sometimes the protagonist is chased by a nearly unstoppable monster, or sometimes a game designer just decided made one monster do a bit too much damage for no apparent reason. Below are some of the toughest battles ever in the Resident Evil franchise.

G4, Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Inb4 G4

G4, Resident Evil 2 Boss Battle on top of train

Players short on grenades will know the agony of fighting G4 William in Resident Evil 2 while on a strict timer. G4 Birkin is also super intimidating and relentless, running around and jumping all over, causing massive damage. His movement doesn’t help with aiming either, as it can be hard to nail the eyes on his always moving and convulsing body.

This guy or thing is completely invincible except for his eyes, which players need to keep on bursting and hitting until it goes down. Where is the jump or dodge button on this lady?

Mother Miranda — Resident Evil: Village (2021)

Mother Of All Rage-Quits

Mother Miranda, Resident Evil: Village with Rose before battle

Have you heard of Mother Miranda? She is only mentioned every two minutes in Resident Evil Village and so when the time comes to face her, the player is ready for a huge battle. By the end of the game, players should have a wealth of resources and weapons to use, so it is not necessarily the lack of these essential items that makes her tough.

She simply takes a lot of hits, does a lot of damage, and at first is very unpredictable. A memorable, tough battle, but not the toughest final battle in RE history.

9

Nemesis — Resident Evil 3 (1999)

Designed for Maximum Difficulty

Nemesis, Resident Evil 3 about to attack Jill

Relentless, iconic, and ugly, Nemesis lives up to its namesake, constantly showing up to ruin the player’s already bad day. In the original Resident Evil game, players did not only fight it but difficult tank controls, a less forgiving inventory cache, and smaller rooms to evade in.

Before the end of the game, this enemy could not even be killed, only slowed down for a reward or two, likely not worth the effort. All the player should do is run, if they can figure out how to do that with the given control scheme.

G3 — Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Fire in the Eyehole

G3, Resident Evil 2 boss battle Leon shooting

Another case of if you have hoarded grenades, you’ll be fine, but if you haven’t, good luck. This awesome-looking iteration of William Birkin comes with some devastating attacks and a seemingly endless health bar. Both Leon and Claire have to fight this jerk, and while Leo does get a flamethrower, he does not get the grenade launcher, which makes Claire’s job much easier than his.

G3’s attacks are not too fast, but they are very damaging, and poor placement can lead to the player losing a lot of vital health. Players with good aim can make this fight go faster, but it ranks among the toughest foes for unprepared players.

7

Giant Bat — Resident Evil Zero (2002)

The True Enemy Is Tank Controls

Giant Bat, Resident Evil Zero

Perhaps not the most famous battle, but one of the most randomly infuriating ones is the fight against the Giant Bat and his cronies in Resident Evil Zero. It’s one thing to head shot a slow-moving zombie, but a flying target with a bunch of minions who stun-lock you while trying to turn around is a whole new level of frustration.

With an already dwindling amount of resources and ammo, some players breezed through this fight and others never made it past this bout, deciding instead to read the plot synopsis online and move onto a different Resident Evil game.

6

Tyrant T-078 — Resident Evil – Code: Veronica (2000)

Code: Veronica Needs an Adult

Tyrant T-078, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica boss battle roaring on plane

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and barely any weapons to use. Players with a guidebook handy might have found this fight a little less challenging than most. But players who went in without knowing “that” part of the fight found a very difficult boss fight leading to a seemingly unkillable boss in a small, cramped plane.

See, at one point, this boss, who was dealing massive damage to the player, stumbles, which the player is then supposed to know means to go to a computer in the corner of the room and send a crate into it knocking it out of the plane. Did this happen in the game before? Nope. Just figure it out yourself!

5

Jack Krauser Knife Fight — Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Button Mashing Madness

Jack Krauser Knife Fight, Resident Evil 4 stabbing Leon

The early 2000’s saw the adoption of cutscenes featuring button prompting to keep players from going to get a snack while they played. Thankfully, this trend did die off, but one part of the universally acclaimed Resident Evil 4 that was not beloved was the quick-time events, specifically, during the knife fight with Jack Krauser, Leon’s best buddy (apparently).

The dexterity required for these scenes in particular was very difficult, barring some players from getting past this particular battle. Quick-fingered players, on the other hand, found this scene a nice change of pace.

4

Heisenberg — Resident Evil Village (2021)

Breaking Bad Men Down

Heisenberg, Resident Evil Village in giant robot armor fighting ethan

The most difficult battle in Resident Evil Village is not actually the last boss, but the Magento-wannabe Heisenberg. The fight is epic, large-scale, and feels more suited to a Transformers film than a Resident Evil game. Another change of pace for the fight is the moment protagonist Ethan takes control of his own metal monstrosity, and what looks like a tank controls like one too.

The memorable but difficult tank controls of the early Resident Evil games come into play, and players must switch back and forth between the two control schemes to use the cannon often, aim for the glowing red parts, and dodge a bunch of attacks to end the Walter White impersonator once and for all.

3

Mr. X — Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Knock Off His Hat and His Attitude

Mr. X, Resident Evil 2 grabbing Leon

The OG never-quitting pursuer for Resident Evil was Mr. X in the 1998 version of Resident Evil 2. In the remake, the memorable murderer makes a comeback brandishing a fedora, and somehow a new personality to boot. In Leon’s final fight against the intelligent Tyrant, there is no weapon he has that can kill the monster, so he must wait for a well-thrown rocket launcher given to him by Ada to end the battle.

Thus, the player can only dodge, shoot, and avoid the monster until this event happens, and while it is far from the longest battle in the series, it ranks among the most difficult since Leon apparently did not know how to roll, duck, or sprint yet. No battle in all of Resident Evil has led to so many one-hit kills as this encounter.

2

Norman — Resident Evil Revelations

The Most Underrated Final Boss

Norman, Resident Evil Revelations Cutscene before boss battle posing

Players who made it all the way to the end of Resident Evil Revelations know very well why Norman is listed among the most brutal battles. The only thing worse than an all-powerful tyrant is one that also teleports, and Norman uses these abilities to his fullest to surprise the player and potentially one-hit crush them if they do not wiggle free.

Norman also has three phases, and rather than being able to stock up on grenades or powerful weapons to ease the battle, the player must simply learn Norman’s patterns of attack and keep coming back until they win out. Norman would fit right into a FromSoftware game with his strategy and difficulty, so he receives a special designation as one of the toughest baddies in all

Resident Evildom.
