Following the success of God of War: Ragnarok, Sony Santa Monica is allegedly working on a new spin-off Metroidvania. After the game’s absence from Sony’s largely underwhelming 2025 E3-season State of Play, trusted reporter Jeff Grubb claims that the game has been delayed.
The alleged God of War Metroidvania is said to focus on a younger version of Kratos during the series’ Greek era. While the PS4 and PS5 games focus on Kratos’ relationship with his son Atreus, the new prequel game will allegedly focus on the character’s relationship with his own father, Zeus.
God of War Metroidvania delayed until 2026
According to Grubb, the upcoming spin-off title has allegedly been pushed to a 2026 release date instead of its previous Holiday 2025 launch. The reporter didn’t explain any specific period for its 2026 launch meaning that it could release at any point during next year.
The upcominggame is said to be a 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off that combines the gameplay of “God of War and Blasphemous”. Another report claims that the game will also see the return of Deimos, Kratos’ brother that was last seen in the PSP spin-off Ghost of Sparta.
Finally, another report claims that the game’s development is being overseen by Sony Santa Monica with the project being a collaboration between the studio and Mega Cat Studios. Known for smaller titles like Backyard Baseball, the studio’s biggest game is currently Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit.
As one of PlayStation’s biggest franchises, God of War has seen the biggest number of spin-offs out of the brand’s still-going IPs. During the PSP era, two prequels were released, and the series even saw a PS3 prequel in the form of God of War: Ascension. While the franchise has seen a large number of titles, we can always do with some more!
Alongside this spin-off, Sony Santa Monica is also said to be working on a new mainline entry in the game, bringing Kratos to Egypt to fight a new pantheon of gods. No release date has been revealed for the next entry in the series.
