Hideo Kojima is the most renowned video game director of all time. The Metal Gear Solid series is cherished all over the world, and Death Stranding has become a beloved masterpiece, too, with DS2 hailed as an excellent experience unlike anything else, as well as one of the best games of 2025 so far. While we’d love the Metal Gear Solid creator to continue making video games forever, Hideo Kojima has suggested his next two games may be his last before taking a sabbatical to make a movie for Hollywood.

In an interview with Brut, Hideo Kojima discussed the video games industry and whether it exists within the same universe as cinema. Regarding the similarities between movies and cinema, Kojima said, “the movie determines the timeline of two hours, and the game is interactive, so the timeline is also determined by the player… [who] also determines the direction you look at, so that’s a big difference”.
However, while the differences caused by player involvement exist, Kojima said that “in terms of creating the background, constructing the world view, and getting the actors to produce, the process for movies and games is pretty much the same up until a certain point”.
Kojima has never been shy in sharing his desire to one day direct a movie. Asked by Brut about his desire to direct a film, Kojima said it can’t happen right now as directing a movie “would take 2 or 3 years,” and he can’t leave Kojima Productions as they are making OD and Physint.
However, after OD and Physint are finished, Kojima will “look at the situation of the studio [Kojima Productions] and if it looks like I can make a movie then I’d like to make one. Physically I’m going to keep working, so I’ll decide when the time comes to make a movie”.
This isn’t the first time Kojima has suggested OD and Physint may be his last before making something for Hollywood. Speaking with GQ in June, Kojima said, “How old will I be after I finish Physint? Late sixties? I haven’t really said anything about the future projects – I do have ideas – but I’m thinking I should direct a film after Physint because I’ll be too old in the future”.
Kojima is focusing on OD next, and it is reportedly “still in development with Xbox,” for now. After that, all efforts will turn to Phsyint, which is slated to be a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid. Hideo Kojima has said he has ideas for a Death Stranding 3, however, someone else will need to make it.
While OD and Physint may be Kojima’s last two games before moving onto Hollywood, it wouldn’t be the end of Kojima Productions as the director told GQ the idea would be “’Hey, go create the game,’ and I go off and shoot [this movie]”. There is also the possibility of Kojima returning to video games after his movie, as he also stated he wants to make a game in space. However, Kojima is fully aware of age catching up with him, so he may no longer have the energy. But, he has previously said in other interviews he wants to die still creating, and, even after he’s dead, he plans on leaving a USB stick full of game ideas for his staff to create.
