When Spiritfarer was originally released in 2020, it was met with favorable reception. According to the review aggregate site Metacritic, it garnered an average score of 84 across 33 critic reviews. Gamers who have played the game have also had a positive experience with it. According to its Steam page, its user reviews are “Overwhelmingly Positive.”

Spiritfarer was nominated for several awards, including Games for Impact and Best Indie Game at The Game Awards 2020. It was also nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Animation during the 24th annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
