Shredding Through Parks and Cities

Everything fans loved about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 is here and back. What you get here are the two title games, with their nineteen total stages and four modes overall. The return of the original stages, which you can shred through in both games, is available for players new and old to take on in new and updated versions. You get to look forward to burying a bully in Canadian snow or tossing a foundry foreman into a pool of water. All the absurdity of the games is back in their full glory, making this arcade skating game extremely enjoyable. The updated visuals add a stunning amount of detail to each map and character, breathing new life into the series.

The games are arcade games at their core, where you collect items and complete objectives to unlock new stages to compete in. Each stage presents you with increasingly challenging tasks to complete, ranging from collecting hidden tapes to achieving the highest score possible in the level. The formula for both Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 is timeless, with it being a joy to play through and do your best to take out as many objectives as you can in the short window of time you have available when you load into the stages.

The updated visuals add a stunning amount of detail to each map and character, breathing new life into the series.

With the inclusion of the deluxe edition, you also end up running into an unexpected collaboration of characters and music. The Doom Slayer not only shreds his enemies, but is also back to shredding on a skateboard. Where one might not imagine Doom music working well within a skateboarding game, it goes surprisingly well when you are looking to push your limits and maintain the highest score possible. The only unfortunate thing with the Doom additions is that the Doom Slayer, music and customization options will not be available to you unless you purchase the pricier version of the game. It’s a bummer, as this is all great content for players to explore and experience. But it has been locked behind a paywall rather than being a classic unlockable character, like the previous versions of the game.

With Great Skating Comes Great Music

While only a small portion of the original music tracks remains, a substantial amount of fantastic music has been added to this remaster. You’ve got classics from the original games that did make it, but what’s nice about the new soundtrack might just be that many players might end up discovering new tracks this time around. It can be disappointing that a personal favorite might not have made its return for you to skate to, but the entire catalog of music is a joy to listen to while performing countless tricks. Finding new music you may not have heard before adds a refreshing layer that’s unexpected.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is as Extreme as the Originals

The classic arcade-style skateboarding franchise is returning for another batch of extremely sick remasters.

The soundtrack brings the entire game together, allowing you to relive the games with similar music. There’s also the inclusion of a Streamer Mode for those who are looking to share their skating adventure with an audience. While the streamer mode soundtrack may lack the consistent quality and entertainment of the main soundtrack, it’s still serviceable and enjoyable on its own for the smaller percentage of overall players who’ll be playing the game. Many players experiencing the game won’t think to check or listen to the streamer mode tracks, but it’s always nice to include those who will and add something extra to the game for those who would utilize such a feature.

There is a lot of good that comes with this remaster, and it is still very fun to play. However, there are some disappointments that come with it in the form of some missing characters and stages. For example, in the original version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 we had several unique characters. While it is understandable that Wolverine and Darth Maul didn’t make the cut this time around, it is still a letdown that we don’t have more characters to unlock while we gather money for the secret shop. We also don’t have the ability to play updated versions of the previous stages that were exclusive to certain consoles. The Oil Rig stage, which was an Xbox exclusive when it was originally released, is not playable in this version. This is the same for all exclusive stages from past games. Unfortunately, they are all missing and unavailable for players to finally experience if they had been missed prior.

Closing Comments:

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 are excellent games and maintain their arcade feel, compelling players to go all out on combos and pull off insane tricks while chasing high scores. One of the downsides to the remaster is that a significant portion of the previously unlockable characters are missing, as are iconic tracks from the soundtrack. While understandable, it’s still a letdown for fans of the additional characters who appreciate the goofy nature these games can offer. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is a fantastic remaster of an experience people know and love, with updated visuals, music and gameplay that keep the skating fresh and special.
