AirConsole brings Atari arcade classics to Volkswagens

AirConsole announced today that it is partnering with Atari to bring two of its arcade titles to Volkswagen vehicles, by way of their in-unit infotainment screens. Breakout: Recharged and Asteroids: Recharged are available to play in supported Volkswagens starting today. Both games support both single-player and co-op play, with users controlling the game via their smartphones.

This is not the first time AirConsole has launched a game within cars, nor is it Atari’s first venture into the vehicular field. AirConsole previously worked with Bandai Namco to launch Pac-Man within Volkswagens, as well as Mattel to launch car versions of Uno and Pictionary. Atari worked with Garmin to bring its titles to the latter’s Unified Car Experience at CES 2023.

Anthony Cliquot, CEO of AirConsole’s parent company N-Dream, said in a statement, “Atari laid the foundation for generations of gamers. To welcome these timeless titles onto AirConsole shows that our vision for in-car play is being embraced by the world’s most trusted entertainment brands.” In addition to the aforementioned Breakout and Asteroids, AirConsole adds that Missile Command: Recharged will also join its library at a later date.

Ethan Stearns, VP of games at Atari, added, “We are excited for Volkswagen drivers and their passengers to discover these modern versions of our classic titles. “The AirConsole team has done a phenomenal job optimizing the in-car controls and has produced an amazing playing experience.”
