AMD Next-Gen GPU Architecture, UDNA/RDNA 5 Appears As GFX13 In A Kernel-Level Codebase
AMD’s GFX13 is supposedly the internal codename for the next-gen architecture for AMD GPUs.
Leaked Codebase Reveals AMD’s Next-Gen UDNA Architecture; Introduces “Wavegroup” Feature
Here is a sneak peek into AMD’s preparation for the next-gen GPU architecture. AMD hasn’t officially confirmed the architecture name yet, but according to various reports, it is likely going to transition from RDNA to UDNA, a Unified GPU architecture for the next-gen GPUs. A kernel-level codebase reveals this upcoming architecture as “GFX13”.
The leaker @Kepler_L2 says that the GFX13 denotes UDNA or RDNA 5, indicating that the architecture naming isn’t confirmed yet. The new architecture is supposedly bringing a new feature called “Wavegroup”. This might be referring to multiple wavefronts, which are groups of threads, typically 32 or 64.
It’s still too early to discuss things like these, but when it comes to UDNA, it’s the very next GPU architecture AMD is going to release for both discrete GPUs and next-gen CPUs. AMD’s current-gen RDNA 4 architecture can only be deployed on discrete GPUs, as we have seen from previous leaks, but UDNA is expected on both CPUs and dGPUs.
Both Zen 6 and UDNA products are rumored to utilize TSMC’s N3E process node, but as of now, the presence of UDNA-based iGPUs on the upcoming Zen 6 CPUs isn’t confirmed yet. Most Zen 6 lineups are expected to bring the RDNA 3.5 architecture, which is available on the Strix Point, Strix Halo, and Krackan Point chips.
As for the UDNA-based products, these are expected to target the high-end segment, which AMD skipped in the current RDNA 4 stack. Nothing much is available on the UDNA yet, except that it exists as per the leaks, and it is speculated that the UDNA-based GPUs will enter mass production in the second quarter of 2026.
Till then, AMD will focus on adding more GPUs to the RDNA 4 lineup, namely, the RX 9000 series. Two GPUs have already been launched, and the RX 9060 XT is next, which is coming at Computex.
