Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is a brilliant CRPG that includes some fantastic LGBTQ+ representation. Despite the online vitriol against queer content in any entertainment, BG3 became one of the best-selling games of the year, earned numerous Game of the Year awards and has a massive community of talented, diverse fans.
Unfortunately, it seems that in the wake of the current political climate in America, multiple game studios are cutting LGBTQ+ content out of their games. Following online hate campaigns, death threats and more, studios have actively cut queer content to appease the current political climate.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Karlach actor warns that LGBTQ games are being censored
Speaking to The Gamer, Baldur’s Gate 3 actor Samantha Béart, who plays Karlach in Larian’s RPG, feared that a game that has the same amount of diversity as Larian’s RPG would not get greenlit by the large majority of studios following the Trump Administration’s win at the end of 2024.
In fact, the actor has seen first-hand what impact the administration’s politics have had on in-development titles as entire storylines are being censored.
“Without exposing devs, I know that’s happening,” the Baldur’s Gate 3 actor explained. “Their storylines have been cut,” they tell me. “Historically, appeasement is a really bad thing.”
Béart explained that queer storylines will still exist, but the majority of AAA studios may cowardly restrict the creation of LGBTQ+ content over the course of this administration. However, the creation of these stories will likely be relegated to small studios or indie teams.
“Indies exist,” the actor said. “And people can write, and communities will get together, and we will absolutely get through this together.”
Of course, this removal of LGBTQ+ content isn’t only hitting video games. After years of constantly promoting the “first gay kiss” in their content, Disney actively pulled a transgender storyline from their Pixar show Win or Lose. The original version of Elio, the recently released Pixar film, was also supposed to be queer-coded to match the original gay director Adrian Molina, but that was scrubbed from the film.
Judging from Larian Studios’ past, it at least feels like a sure bet that the developer’s next game—or next two games—will also feature LGBTQ+ characters. After all, what’s an CRPG without at least one queer character popping up? Honestly, that would be sacrilegious.
