Dark Souls III
Return To Where It All Ended
The Dark Souls franchise was where it all began. Though it was not the first to center around a dark fantasy realm with difficult bosses and dying over and over again, Dark Souls perfected it, inventing the genre: soulslike. Were it not for this series, many of the titles seen here might not have happened.
In Dark Souls III, the Age of Fire is coming to an end. As the Unkindled, it falls on you to return the Lords of Cinder to their thrones — only then can you decide the fate of the First Flame. With some of the best armor designs in the franchise, large open maps to explore, crawling with danger, secrets and optional encounters, along with incredible boss battles, Dark Souls III will remind you why FromSoftware is the champion of action role-playing games. Just be ready to die — a lot.

Lies of P
The Darkest Pinocchio Yet
Lies of P puts players into the role of Pinocchio. But this ain’t your Disney’s Pinocchio, nor the original book either. Puppets created by Geppetto have gone mad and rebelled against the city of Krat in what is known as the Puppet Frenzy. Awakening in this twisted world, it becomes a tale of truth versus lies as you seek out your creator while facing off against the mad puppets.
Ignoring how insane the plot sounds on paper, Lies of P is an incredible dark fantasy game. The combat feels tight and smooth, its grim atmosphere is magnificent, and instead of fighting demons or eldritch abominations, your foes are puppets and mutated monsters. Highly recommended for fans of soulslike games.

Black Myth: Wukong
The New Tale of the Monkey King
In some games, you play as a human, a deity or an alien, but in Black Myth: Wukong, players get to play what they’ve always dreamed of being: a monkey with attitude. You assume the role of the Destined One, on a quest to recover the six relics of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. Armed with your magic staff and spells, you’ll feel like a god as you defy the Celestial Court.
Black Myth: Wukong comes recommended for players who tire of traditional action meets fantasy and are looking for something different. The story, enemies, locations and art design all draw from Chinese folklore, plus the game was also inspired by the book Journey to the West. Add in the astonishing graphics, spectacular animation work and powerful range of abilities — including epic transformation spells — and there’s plenty of reason to give Black Myth: Wukong a look.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
Reclaim Your Home
The year is 1274. The Mongol Empire has invaded. The island of Tsushima is under siege. You are a young samurai named Jin Sakai. To avenge your people and save your home, you must become The Ghost and defeat the Mongols by any means necessary. Ghost of Tsushima not only features a compelling story but also an incredible combat system in a beautiful and immense open world.
The sword combat feels satisfying and fluid, but it also relies on fighting stances and special moves, which adds to how brutal it can get for both sides. Though you are strong, so are your foes, so you’ll have to rely on visual and audio cues to make the correct attacks. As for the open world, it’s easy to get lost on the beautiful island of Tsushima. This is a game that encourages and rewards exploration, as it’s littered with side quests and secrets.

Bloodborne
A Nightmarish Fusion of Action & Horror
Dark fantasy is fine, but Bloodborne takes the genre to the level of Gothic meets cosmic horror. Enter the Hunter’s Dream and prepare to face some of the fiercest and most frightening enemies ever seen in the soulslike genre. In Bloodborne, it’s not just about having the best weapons, gear and strategy, but having the guts to swallow your fear and face the unknown.
With a perfect balance between world-building, level design, combat and enemies so disturbing and bizarre that H. P. Lovecraft himself would be proud, Bloodborne is nothing short of a masterpiece. It was also one of the first soulslike games to add firearms to its roster of weapons. If you loved Nightreign but missed out on Bloodborne, add this to your must-play list and discover why fans are begging for a sequel, or at the very least, a remaster.
