With Sonic Frontiers, SEGA decided to play with the traditional formula of the hedgehog’s 3D outings, and the result is one of his strongest adventures in a long time. While certainly not without its flaws, this open world spin on the speedy character is refreshing, giving him ample room to run and plenty of opportunities to engage in bite-size platforming challenges. Most importantly, Sonic feels nimble and fun to control — most of the time, anyway. There’s definitely some rough edges here, but it’s ultimately an enjoyable game that fans of the franchise will adore.
As gameplay concepts go, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania is not especially complex. This remaster of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe – itself a compilation of Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2’s impressive 300 stages – sees you rolling apes through increasingly challenging environments, collecting bananas and attempting to reach the goal in record time. While this is unquestionably entertaining, the real longevity comes from the Mini Games, which can be played by up to four players, and span everything from soccer through to baseball and much, much more. It’s vibrant and accessible, with a ton of depth – the perfect arcade party game, then.
Atlus has successfully translated the turn-based combat of its 2017 masterpiece into a competent tactical experience, though Persona 5 Tactica won’t be heralded with the same praise. Consistently good during fights, customising your party and mastering its many stages is where the game is at its best. However, there’s little to the title besides those skirmishes, and without any exploration or sense of character progression, this feels like the Phantom Thieves at the end of their tether. Joker and co have enjoyed a great run, but Persona 5 fatigue is well and truly beginning to set in.
Two of the industry’s puzzle titans clash in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, the sequel to SEGA’s absurdly addictive block-stacking mash-up. With support for up to four different players, and a variety of curiously compelling modes – including the bonkers Fusion, which sees you managing a board of Tetraminos and Puyos simultaneously – this vibrant outing will have you hooked from the very first line you clear. If you’re a fan of single player campaigns, then there’s even a cute story you can play through, and you can collect cards to boost your abilities in the brand new Skill Battle mode.
Soul Hackers 2 is a Shin Megami Tensei spinoff that takes obvious cues from the Persona series, promoting social links with a ragtag cast of weird characters. Primarily, though, this is a turn-based dungeon crawler with some cool ideas. And even though some of these ideas don’t quite come together at times, it’s easy to appreciate the style and swagger of this often odd RPG.
