Call of Duty: Black Ops II Finally Gets a Proper Sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Announced

Treyarch, Raven Software, and Activision today revealed the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

What will we see?

Activision did not confirm what they intend to show at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but we can look to the past to make a few guesses about what to expect. Activision has used Gamescom for the past three years to showcase a first look at that year’s Call of Duty’s gameplay. Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, and Black Ops 6 all received campaign-focused trailers. Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6 went the extra mile and showcased walkthroughs of campaign missions. The publisher then supplements that showing with developer intel on the official Call of Duty Blog.

What players shouldn’t expect is much news about the game’s multiplayer or Zombies components or what’s happening next with Call of Duty: Warzone. The past couple of years, Activision has held dedicated Call of Duty Next events to cover all three topics. It’s possible that Activision will announce the dates for this event at Opening Night Live should they choose to hold one this year.

A story left untold

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 acts as a proper sequel to Black Ops II and will answer many of the plot threads left open by that game. The story follows David Mason 10 years after the events of Black Ops II where he and his allies attempt to thrawt a manipulative enemy capable of weaponizing fear. The teaser trailer also revealed that Raul Menendez will return in some capacity, the campaign will feature four-player co-op, and that the fictional city of Avalon (from Black Ops 6) will feature throughout the campaign. Outside of that, little is known about Black Ops 7 outside of rumors about the return of Pick 10, the map lineup including both classic Black Ops II and brand new maps, and Omnimovement getting an upgrade. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens at Gamescom.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches this holiday season on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
