For now, the war against the Illuminate in Helldivers 2 is over. Arrowhead declared that players had won the “Battle of Super Earth,” albeit at the cost of “catastrophic damage” such as the fall of Mega Cities as well as the death of the Super Earth president. Arguably the best aspect of the war was seeing millions of players worldwide teaming up to defend virtual representations of real-life locations. In light of this, even a Chinese TV News station has celebrated Helldivers 2 players across America and China co-operating to defend humanity.

As shared on the official Helldivers 2 subreddit, “The Defense of EoS got into the Shanghai Morning News (Jun 2)”.The post contains a link to the morning news presentation uploaded onto kankanews.
According to a summary from a “Chinese speaker” in the replies, the presenters explained the Illuminate invading Super Earth and players needing to defend seven Mega Cities to help save humanity. Per the summary, the presenters discussed players from America and China rallying and co-ordinating on social media “to make a last stand in Shanghai,” with “Chinese troops to push hard during the daytime, and Americans to defend the line to stop aliens from recapturing territory during night in China when everyone is sleeping”.
Lastly, while the Super Earth equivalent of New York fell, the Super Earth equivalent of Shanghai was successfully defended with the Illuminate fleeing.
In addition to this morning news presentation, there’s an article from Global Times headlined, “More than a game: players across borders unite to defend virtual Earth”. This specifically discussed and praised the teamwork between Chinese and American helldivers.
The article mentions how Chinese players helped to defend the equivalent of New York, while Americans helped to defend Shanghai. An unnamed Chinese player reminisced about fighting alongside American comrades, saying, “I told them, ‘Don’t save me,’ and they replied, ‘We can wait. We will”.
Lastly, the article mentions that after victory against the Illuminate was secured with Shanghai still standing, the sacrifice of New York didn’t go unnoticed as “Chinese players paid tribute to their allies’ decision, recognizing the solidarity and selflessness behind it”.
The Battle of Super Earth was fantastic, and it was well worth the wait. Stories of players coming together from all over the world and across politically differing nations is heartwarming, and it is further evidence of the immersive success of Helldivers 2.
