Cyberpunk 2 is now in pre-production, CDPR confirms

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2 is entering into pre-production, ditching its ‘Project Orion’ codename that was used since the project was confirmed back in 2022.
CDPR has to give regular updates to investors, and in the latest report, the studio has now confirmed the latest progress – this follows on from a March update where Project Orion was said to be nearing the end of its concept phase and heading into pre-production “in the coming weeks”.
With the jump, the game’s development is now being branded as Cyberpunk 2, though that isn’t necessarily what the game will be called upon release. Speaking to The Verge, this “just means it’s another game in the Cyberpunk universe.”
The Cyberpunk 2 team will likely start to grow pretty quickly over the coming months, as it’s now 94-strong (up from 84 earlier this year). This is the CD Projekt Red North America team, combining locations in Vancouver and Boston (which was founded in 2022/3). Separately, the 422-strong Polish team is hard at work on The Witcher 4, and there’s other smaller teams working on Project Sirius and Project Hadar.
Somewhere within all of that, CDPR’s also been producing the Nintendo Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk 2077 internally. That is set to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 next week on 5th June.
