Divisive BioWare PS4 Game Shutting Down

Originally released for the PS4 back in 2019, BioWare‘s divisive action RPG Anthem got a new update, and the handful of players who may still be playing the game will be bummed. The developer is shutting down its servers within the next six months.

In a new update from BioWare, the company confirms they are sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.
“We have an important update to share regarding Anthem. After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026,” reads the statement. “This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.”
“We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that,” continues the statement.
A brief FAQ is attached to this update, giving Anthem players a good rundown of what to expect as BioWare ramps down its support for the game. Most notably, as this is an online-only game, players will no longer be able to play the game after January 12, 2026. Additionally, as of today, players can no longer purchase the game or its in-game currency.
Anthem is still available to play through the publisher’s gaming service, EA Play. However, it will be removed from the playlist on August 15, 2025.
With the recent layoffs at Xbox, certainly BioWare fans are wondering if shutting down Anthem has impacted the studio. The developer confirmed that sunsetting the game has not led to any layoffs.
