Techland, the developer behind Dying Light, is working on a brand-new Call of Juarez game developed in Unreal Engine 5.
As the team finishes up development of Dying Light: The Beast—which will tease the future of the franchise—developing is continuing on the next entry in its cowboy series.
The new Call of Juarez game has reportedly been “in development for some time”, writes outlet Insider Gaming. The last game in the series is 2013’s underrated Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, but Techland officially regained the rights to its franchise in 2018.
While the upcoming cowboy game is still in development, the studio has cancelled two games that were mid-development. One of these games is an untitled fantasy RPG said to be heavily inspired by Lucasfilm’s iconic Star Wars franchise.
Known as Project Cornerstone, the scrapped fantasy RPG had been in development for some time, since at least 2022. The game would’ve allowed players to use a power like Star Wars’ The Force to move and manipulate objects as well as use other powers. One of these additional powers would’ve allowed players to stop time.
Project Cornerstone originally started development on Techland’s in-house Chrome Engine, the same tools that power Dying Light 2 and the upcoming spin-off game The Beast. However, development shifted at some point to Unreal Engine, a shift that seems to have caused issues.
Insider Gaming explains that the “project struggled for some years due to poor leadership decisions”, but it’s “not entirely clear why the game was cancelled”.
For the time being, Techland is putting all of its eggs into the Dying Light basket with the next game in the series launching on August 22 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. More Dying Light games are also in early development capitalising on the studio’s greatest success.
