The Father of the Elder Scrolls series Julian LeFay has sadly died after a battle with cancer. LeFay, who was the lead programmer on The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1996, sadly passed just a week after stepping back from game development.

The iconic game developer’s passing was announced via a statement from OnceLost Games, LeFay’s studio with Elder Scrolls co-creator Ted Peterson. LeFay founded the studio to create The Wayward Realms, a modern successor to the classic Daggerfall style of RPGs.

Via a post on Kickstarter, The Wayward Realms studio updated fans with the tragic news of LeFay’s passing.

“Julian LeFay was not just a colleague — he was a visionary who fundamentally shaped the gaming industry as we know it today,” they said. “Known as the ‘Father of The Elder Scrolls’, Julian directed the creation of legendary titles including Elder Scrolls 1 and 2: Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire.

“His pioneering work established the foundation for open-world RPGs and influenced countless developers and games that followed.”

The team explained that The Wayward Realms will continue development with the team inspired by LeFay’s “strength, determination and unwavering focus”.

“We are more committed than ever to bringing The Wayward Realms to life exactly as Julian envisioned it,” the team explained. “Our development continues with the same passion, technical excellence, and attention to detail that Julian demanded. Every feature, every system, and every player experience will aim to reflect his dedication to creating ‘The Grand RPG’ that redefines what the genre can be.”

Julian LeFay spent years working on The Wayward Realms with Elder Scrolls co-creator Ted Peterson. The game is still in active development.

Following the news, Bethesda, the studio still in charge of The Elder Scrolls, released a statement memorialising the iconic game developer.

“It’s with great sadness we learn of the passing of Julian LeFay,” the studio said. “He was the driving force in the creation of The Elder Scrolls and the foundations of Bethesda as a game studio.”

“Simply put, without Julian, we would not be here today. If you had the opportunity to work with Julian, you were blessed to know a one-of-a-kind force of nature, who pushed everyone to create something special,” they continued. “His work and spirit will live on both in our memories and in our games.”
