Scalpers have, once again, ruined things for everyone, this time decimating the latest Warhammer product launch to make some dirty money.
In a surprise move, Games Workshop has officially delayed the pre-order period for the special edition of its Siege of Terra: Era of Ruin novel, the latest instalment in the Horus Heresy storyline due to the fetid behaviour of online scalpers.
Games Workshop pauses Warhammer site sales
Usually, we’re more focused on the video game side of Warhammer here at VideoGamer, hence the name. From discussing amazing 12-player Space Marine mods to interviewing the Boltgun devs, there’s always more 40K games to discuss.
However, Warhammer has suffered from scalping for years, and it’s worth mentioning, even if it is slightly out of our remit. While scalping has proven troublesome in the past, Games Workshop has been forced to delay the launch of its Siege of Terra: Era of Ruin novel due to the sheer veracity of scalpers and bots.
Initially, Games Workshop commenced pre-orders with a queue system designed specifically to combat scalpers and bots on the official Warhammer website. However, the sheer number of scalpers armed with bots became overwhelming which caused GW to go nuclear on the launch, shut down the website and keep everything until a later date.
In a statement to fans, the company urged fans that the special edition of Siege of Terra: Era of Ruin is still coming out. However, the company needs time to figure out how to get the item into the hands of real fans and not dipsticks online who’ll resell it for a massive markup.
“Today we launched our pre-order for the much-anticipated special edition of Siege of Terra: Era of Ruin anthology,” the company told fans. “Unfortunately, scalpers attempted to use bots to bypass our normal safeguards.”
The company explained that its “pausing the launch of Era of Ruin” for the time being, delaying the pre-order period for an unspecified amount of time.
“Don’t worry, it’s still coming—we’re just absolutely determined that real fans get it,” the company said. “All erroneous orders are being purged. This is our number one priority.”
We’ve all lived through at least one product we’ve wanted being picked up by scummy scalpers instead of actual customers. How many Pokemon card sets have been rushed by 40-year-old resellers instead of their actual target demographic? Hopefully, someone will actually design a way to beat scalpers sometime soon.
