Gargant Boss Guide in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Some Nevrons are the size of men in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, while others are the size of buildings. For Gargant, it’s the latter as this monstrous creature is holding the train station east of Monoco’s Station hostage. Traverse up the large and winding train station in this endgame area and face off against one of the more difficult bosses in the game. While this is optional content, Gargant will be a familiar face for a handful of the side stories.

Description |
---|---|
Gargant lands a series of punches |
At the start of the fight, this will be a simple three-hit combo with a pattern of normal > fast > fast. |
Gargant performs a smash combo. |
Probably the easiest attack Gargant has in its arsenal. It will perform a four-hit combo with a pattern that is normal speed all the way through. Simply watch for when his arms begin to move downward before parrying. |
A Snow Storm arrives. |
This is when his moves will become more deadly. |
Gargant throws even more punches. |
This is the Series of Punches move but adds another three strikes. The pattern turns into normal > normal > fast > fast > normal > slow. |
Gargant tears up the field with his arms. |
You will need to learn to time this move as Gargant will perform it after every attack. If it succeeds, it will freeze the character. |
Gargant Freezes [Character]. |
This is a four-hit combo on the entire party that is pretty easy to parry. You will need to remember the third hit is very fast, but otherwise the speed of the attack is normal > normal > fast > slow. |
Gargant Yells. |
This is only ever cast when someone is frozen. It will shoot that character with the canon on its back. |
Strategy
Depending on how far into the story you are, you could face Gargant shortly after getting Monoco, or as late as the endgame just before the final boss. This boss is part of the endgame area that is accessible fairly early on, which acts as a very good way to overlevel. With that said, the boss can be taken down even at a much lower level, but it will take some extra time.
Like a lot of Chromatic enemies (especially in this area), the Gargant will swap between his fire and ice stances throughout the fight depending on if you hit his weakness. You simply have to look at what color his body is emitting.
The start of the fight is pretty straightforward, but as soon as Gargant casts his Snow Storm, things get a little trickier. This is because the giant will constantly try to freeze a character after an attack. This is particularly dangerous because of the follow-up attack on its next turn, almost guaranteed to kill an ally if not careful. You will need to figure out the timing for the parry or dodge, otherwise you will need a dispelling Picto to get rid of the Freeze and avoid immediate death.
Outside of this, hope for the “Gargant tears up the field with his arms” attack. This is a short four-hit combo with a quick third hit, but once you realize how easy it is to parry, you will drain the boss’ health very quickly considering the parry is a party-wide parry.
