The original Gears of War is coming to PlayStation 5 in the form of the brand-new Gears of War Reloaded. The massive Xbox exclusive is making its PlayStation debut almost 20-years after its original release.
Gears of War Reloaded is a modernised take on the original 2006 entry. Essentially an updated version of the game’s Ultimate Edition remaster, the new release will include some fresh improvements, bug fixes, and performance boosts. Just like Forza Horizon 5, the game is also PS5 Pro Enhanced.
Reloaded includes the original game’s entire campaign with refreshed visuals as well as the beloved multiplayer mode. The new port will run at native 4K and 120FPS on the PlayStation 5, just like the Xbox Series X version. The game will also feature crossplay.
“Gears of War: Reloaded is a celebration of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “Featuring 4K resolution, 120 FPS support, and the ultimate multiplayer experience with cross-progression and cross-play, across all platforms, this is the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever.”
Alongside the PlayStation 5 port, the new version will also be available on PC and Xbox Series consoles. Players who already own the Ultimate Edition on both platforms will receive a free upgrade. For those that don’t, the new port will cost $39.99. There’s no word about a Nintendo Switch 2 version, although Microsoft is planning to support that system.
The game includes the following features:
- 4K resolution
- 60 FPS in Campaign
- 120 FPS in Multiplayer
- High Dynamic Range (HDR)
- Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos
- 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
- 4K assets and remastered textures
- Enhanced post-processing visual effects
- Improved shadows and reflections
- Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing
- Zero loading screens during Campaign

Alongside this new revised version of the original game, developer The Coalition and People Can Fly are also working on the Unreal Engine 5 prequel Gears of War E-Day. There’s very little information regarding the new game. However, we really hope it brings back Gears 3’s Beast Mode.
With Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War now on PlayStation 5, there’s only one Xbox exclusive left actually exclusive to Xbox: Halo. As 343, now Halo Studios, plan the next steps for the flagship Xbox franchise, it seems quite obvious that the series will come to PlayStation eventually. Now, wouldn’t that be something.
