Genre-Defining Classic Final Fantasy Tactics Receives Ivalice Chronicles Remaster for PC, Consoles Later This Year

Square Enix has revealed Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, a new edition of the classic tactical RPG. It’ll be possible to play it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Steam) on September 30. The company has also confirmed support for Steam Deck.
A Fan-Favorite Entry in the Legendary RPG Saga
One of the most beloved games in the franchise, Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released for the first PlayStation console back in 1997. Over the following years, the game received editions on the PlayStation Portable and mobile devices with the moniker “The War of the Lions,” which featured cel-shaded full-motion videos, a different balance and a revamp of the title’s localization.

The game tells the story of Ramza Beoulve, a noble whose importance in Ivalice’s history has been lost in the records. In a world of big political turmoil, he and his friend Delita will walk their own paths as they learn more about the surrounding situation. Square Enix describes it in a blog post as “a powerful tale full of drama, emotion, love and betrayal.”
Directed and written by Yasumi Matsuno, Final Fantasy Tactics is part of a world called Ivalice which encompasses some of his projects. Other games under the Ivalice Alliance umbrella include Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII, and the Tactics Advance portable entries.
The first trailer reveals the game, teasing the epic story, grid-based combat and a few interface details. The game has been reworked for HD displays and also adds features that can enhance usability for new players.
Two Modes to Play a Classic Game
The Ivalice Chronicles includes two different ways to experience the game: Classic and Enhanced. Those who wish to play the game as close as possible to the original on modern devices will have the chance to do it with the first option. Meanwhile, the latter includes various additions to make the experience enhanced for newcomers.
One of the most beloved games in the franchise, Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released for the first PlayStation console back in 1997.
Classic mode keeps the game closer to the original style while Enhanced makes the 3D battlegrounds and pixel art more vibrant for HD displays. The interface has also been overhauled so that players may have better control over units and see turn order.
The Enhanced edition includes full voice acting in English and Japanese, and it’s possible to speed up battles and pick between different difficulty levels so that players who want a big challenge and those who prefer a laidback experience may both enjoy it. Another addition is tactical view which allows players to get the full view of the battlefield to plan the next actions.
While Classic mode won’t have the new features, it’ll still follow the War of the Lions translation rather than the original one. It’ll also feature an auto save feature that players may use to still make it slightly more comfortable if they want.
Preorders will include standard, deluxe and Collector’s Box editions. The Deluxe Edition will only include in-game items, such as Akademy Blade, Akademy Beret, Akademy Tunic, Ring of Aptitude, Black and Red Equipment for Ramza and a Phoenix Down pack. Meanwhile, the Collector’s Box brings physical goodies such as an art sheet, chocobo mini plushies, zodiac stones acrylic magnets, a figure of Ramza, a pop-up art of the church and a special art box.
