GPD Reportedly Prepared The First Strix Halo-Based Gaming Handheld Prototype, Offering 10,000+ Points In Time Spy

This might be the only Strix Halo gaming handheld available, but it may not be sold if the reports are true. It uses AMD’s flagship Ryzen AI Max chip with 16 cores and Radeon 8060S graphics.
GPD Ryzen AI Max+ 395-Based Handheld Prototype Spotted: 10,366 Points in Time Spy, Thanks to Radeon 8060S
AMD’s flagship Zen 5 mobile lineup, aka the Strix Halo or Ryzen AI Max, was debuted at the beginning of this year. We knew from the very specifications of those monster 16-core processors that vendors would have to think twice to use them on gaming handhelds since the cost can be insanely high compared to the most popular gaming handhelds in the market. GPD, the Chinese handheld manufacturer, apparently still went with the idea and reportedly created a prototype already.

We don’t know when GPD designed this and what its plans are regarding its release, but at the moment, it looks like it is just for internal testing purposes. The leaker @9950pro posted the pic of the handheld with its Time Spy score. As can be seen from the pic, the handheld uses Strix Halo’s flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, which scored 10,393 points overall and 10,366 points in Graphics. If you are familiar with its specs, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has the strongest iGPU on the mainstream market, featuring RDNA 3.5-based Radeon 8060S.

The Radeon 8060S can easily exceed even 11,000 points in Time Spy Graphics, and it’s the highest score no handheld has ever reached till now. The fastest handhelds on the planet currently are either based on the Strix Point chips, which feature the Radeon 890M, or those with Intel Lunar Lake chips. However, Strix Halo is far ahead of those in both raw CPU prowess and graphics computational power. This GPD handheld could essentially play most modern titles on high to ultra settings at 1080p with 60+ fps, but it will need much more power than Strix Point.
Maybe it will never be released…

To this date, not every handheld manufacturer has agreed to deploy the Strix Point in their newest handheld designs, let alone the Strix Halo. Strix Halo devices, such as mini PCs with Ryzen AI Max+ 395, usually cost over $1500, and the handhelds can easily go beyond $2000, which isn’t practical. This is why @9950pro says that it may never be released for the mainstream market. Nonetheless, the gaming handhelds will have to evolve eventually into either adopting Strix Halo or better alternatives in the near future.
