Helldivers 2 has been fantastic ever since it came out, but, during its time in development, it experienced several changes. Such changes included scrapping five-player squads for the betterment of the game, but there was also content that sadly got scrapped due to time constraints. In response to the community, the Helldivers 2 CCO has just shared a cut animation that actually explains the seemingly pointless “little circles” on the back of helmets worn by Super Earth Soldiers.
Helldivers 2 CCO explains “little circles” on back of the helmet
On the Helldivers subreddit, OP, ToasterStabber95, shared a post asking, “What are these circles on the helmets?”.In asking fellow helldivers, the OP explained that “Almost every helmet I own has one of these little circles on the back, I kind of assumed it had something to do with the hellpods, but I saw someone say it could be a tightening mechanism for the helmet”.
Seeking an official explanation, Arrowhead CCO, Pilestedt, chimed in and provided the actual reason. In response to a user speculating they are for oxygen, Pilestedt said, “Yep, this is what we originally intended it for. Oxygen supply during planetfall”.
As per the CCO, the original idea when emerging from the Hellpod was for Helldivers to disconnect from a connecting hose. Unfortunately, this was scrapped as the studio “didn’t have time to make the anim[ation] for it”.
Following Pilestedt’s explanation, another user asked, “Is that why there’s another circle on the nape of the neck for the body armor, or at least for some armors?”. To this, Pilestedt revealed, “Yes, there was some idea of pressurization for some suits and connectability between helmet / suit”.

Lastly, in response to a user suggesting Arrowhead “have time now” to finish the animation, Pilestedt said, “Haha, actually there is so much the team is working on. I think we have less time than before release, since we now want to release great updates ever so often to keep the game fresh!”.
This isn’t a massive feature that was omitted, but it’s a neat idea worthy of at least knowing about. It’s a shame the idea never materialized and made the final cut, however, at least we now know the official reason behind this design choice for helmets belonging to Super Earth Soldiers.
