How to Underwater Dive in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

How to Underwater Dive in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

If there’s one thing the developers of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has done exceptionally well, and there are a lot of them, it’s the progression of exploration. You start off the game in a dungeon, and eventually you come out into the overworld where you’re on foot, slowly moving from one area to the next. Then you obtain a mount that speeds things up and allows you to get through hazardous terrain with ease. It then moves onto being able to swim, and eventually, at the end of the game, flying. But, there’s one traversal means that is somewhat hidden.

What is Underwater Diving?

Near the end of the game, little spots around the world will appear in the ocean that can be interacted with. Unfortunately, it will bring up the message “Esquie can’t go underwater yet.” Considering these giant glowing beacons are flashing you in the face, you’ll likely want to be able to gain access to underwater diving immediately. Sadly, doing so requires a bit of work. It doesn’t work in the sense that you will need to go through various battles (although one is needed), but instead go through an entire side quest storyline. Fortunately, doing so will pay off significantly.

How to Dive Underwater?

As we mentioned, you will need to go through a series of side quests in order to be able to have Esquie go underwater. As you might imagine, it’s as simple as getting Esquie’s relationship level up a bit. Once you reach level 5, the next mission will allow you to go on a small journey to obtain the means of underwater diving.

You will be able to progress through Esquie’s storyline fairly quickly throughout the second Act, but unfortunately you will need to wait until Act III before things can be completed. While most of the other characters’ relationships make somewhat sense, like Lune and Maelle requiring you to go to areas that are only accessible by flight, Esquie’s reasoning is more plot-related.

The sixth relationship rank is actually tied to Esquie’s rock, Soarrie, which is only given back to him at the end of Act II. Once he gets it back, he scolds Verso for hiding it from him, but remembers where he lost Urrie, the rock that gives him the ability to go underwater. And where did he lose it? Back in Francois’ cave.

Fortunately, the game doesn’t require you to go across the world like the other relationship quests, but instead teleports you to Francois and initiates a fight. After beating him, there’s a surprisingly heartfelt scene as you return with the rock and the ability to go underwater. Now all you need to do is test it out. Every time you dive underwater at a glowing spot in the water, you will get 5 Colour of Lumina which you can now use at any Expedition flag to help upgrade the storage of mastered Pictos for each character.
