How to unlock Mario Kart World Mirror Mode on Switch 2

As is tradition for the Mario Kart series, Mario Kart World on Switch 2 has a mirror mode that lets you race the whole game flipped horizontally with every left turned right and every right turned left, but how you unlock this mode in Mario Kart World is a bit different to usual, and we’ve seen plenty of confusion about how this works.
We’ve got the breakdown of how to unlock Mario Kart World Mirror Mode, some tips and tricks for the Free Roam mode unlockables, and how to access Free Roam Mirror Mode!
How to Unlock Mario Kart World Mirror Mode
In previous games, the usual requirement to unlock Mirror mode was to earn gold trophies in all 150cc Grand Prix cups. But for Mario Kart World there’s more modes that Nintendo has roped into this.
To unlock mirror mode, you need to meet five requirements. You must have completed every 150cc Cup, every Knockout Tour rally, and collected ten of each of the three collectables in the Free Roam open world.
- Complete every Grand Prix Cup (including Special Cup) at 150cc
- Complete every 150cc Knockout Tour Rally
- Collect 10 ? panels in Free Roam
- Collect 10 Peach Coins in Free Roam
- Complete 10 P-Switch Challenges in Free Roam.
Note: You do not have to come first in every event, just complete them.
The final trigger is completing Special Cup in 150cc, so if you’ve done this before meeting other requirements, then to finally unlock mirror mode you need to go back and race Special Cup all over again.
Free Roam Collectables Tips & Tricks
Since you don’t need to win the cups and rallies, the trickiest part of all this might actually be the Free Roam collectables, and Peach Coins in particular.
P-Switches are pretty visible when driving around, poking up out of the ground with their blue domes all over the world map. By contrast ? panels are found at the different track locations in the open world, so you can fast travel to each one and search in a small area. Each of track features a set of Binoculars that can give you a high up view of the area to pan around and spot where they are.
Peach Coins can be a bit trickier, though. They’re basically just shinier looking coins, and they’re often on archways, tucked away off the beaten path and require a bit more ingenuity to reach.
One tip for finding all of these is to use the mini-map in the bottom right corner of the screen. This is a render of the world from a bird’s eye view, and will often show you collectables that are near you… but not always.
Once you know where you need to get to, the best trick we can suggest is to use the rewind function. Press down on the D-pad and it will wind back your position a few seconds to let you try again. You’ll have lost your momentum, but can have another go. It’s also great if you overshoot a landing spot and can potentially rewind and drop you down on a small ledge.
In general, a bit of persistence will go a long way to success.
How to Unlock Mario Kart World Mirror Mode and Free Roam
Once unlocked, you can select Mirror Mode when selecting a Grand Prix or Knockout Tour event.
It’s not so simple in Free Roam. For Free Roam Mirror Mode you need to head to the Peach Stadium area, find a stained glass window of Princess Peach, and then drive through to flip the world.
