Markiona, Puppeteer of Death Boss Guide in Lies of P: Overture

Markiona, Puppeteer of Death Boss Guide in Lies of P: Overture

Alluring, arrogant, and deadly, Markiona, Puppeteer of Death is a twist on the classic Soulslike trope of a dual boss fight, where you must face two dangerous foes at once (Markiona and her Arche Puppet). One of many tough fights in Lies of P: Overture, this fight requires splitting your attention between Markiona and her puppet in a way that can easily get overwhelming.

Markiona’s Moveset

Move

Description

Melee Combo

Markiona does a slow, relatively predictable combo where she swings an orb with one hand, then the other, and then does a slam move. She can alternatively swipe three times, without a slam.

Strut

A move where the boss confidently struts forward, as orbs quickly swing in front of her, where she is relatively vulnerable from behind.

Orb Grab

A grab where Markiona tosses her orbs a relatively short distance in front of her, with the orbs grabbing you if not dodged or otherwise avoided. The attack has a pretty distinct animation and can usually be easily avoided, but can deal pretty extreme damage.

Heavy Toss

A move where she tosses two especially large orbs in front of her for heavy damage, one at a time. Fairly easy to dodge and punish if you pay attention to the size of the orbs being generated.

Boomerang Toss

An orb toss move where orbs are tossed forward and then boomerang back, meaning they may need to be avoided twice (depending on your position). Markiona spins when sending them out and calling them back.

Orb Circle

Markiona summons two orbs, which rapidly spin around her in a circle, potentially damaging you multiple times if in range.

Markiona’s Puppet”s Move Set

Move

Description

Charge

A charge with its mace-like weapon that can cover almost the whole arena. Regularly used when the puppet is distant from you. Fairly easy to dodge or block, as long as you pay attention to the strand of energy turning red.

Melee Beatdown

A series of agile kicks, some of which allow the puppet to cover more distance than you might expect. Commonly used when the puppet is attacking while somewhat close. Can be dodged or blocked.

Orbit

The puppet spins around Markiona in a tight circle, potentially hitting multiple times if not properly dodged or blocked.

Radiant Combo

A series of attacks which can be delivered after the pair has taken enough damage, ending in a ground slam that is followed up by a wide explosion. Described in more detail in the next section, the explosion attack at the end is best avoided, but its damage can be heavily reduced with a block.

Radiant Combo 2

Similar to the above, this attack occurs when Markiona is heavily damaged, with the puppet and Markiona glowing. This combo attack has the puppet try to strike at the player multiple times with a mace, with Markiona coming in at the end to try and slam a sphere into the player.

A key aspect of this fight is that Markiona and her puppet are linked by some type of energy. This energy can be thought of as where Markiona is focusing her attention, as she seems to use it to order her puppet. If it is blue, Markiona is your main threat, where she is able to summon blue energy balls and use them to perform a variety of attacks.

While the energy is red, her Arche Puppet is the main threat, where it will typically try to charge, kick, and otherwise hit you with a variety of melee moves. With enough hits, Markiona’s technology will temporarily malfunction, stunning her and leaving her puppet basically inert, allowing for a brief period of safe hits against either target.

Markiona's glow attack, performed once she takes enough damage.

Finally, when damaged enough, Markiona and her puppet will eventually glow with a yellow aura, entering a temporary super state, allowing them to use two of their most dangerous move combos. The worst of these is a combo that allows her puppet to attack fairly quickly and then try to slam down on you. Once it has slammed into the ground, you should try to quickly run from it, as the puppet will then do a heavily damaging explosive attack with a wide radius.

This boss can certainly be a challenge, especially in NG+ or above, but her difficulty is comparable to that of later bosses in the base game once you understand her weaknesses and attack patterns.

Defeating Markiona

Markiona should typically be your focus in this fight. The Queen’s Arche Puppet has much less health, but is only temporarily downed when defeated; Markiona will then begin healing the puppet while fighting you with the moves she has that don’t require the puppet. In testing, the benefits of taking the puppet down temporarily just didn’t seem worth the extra effort, even if it reduces Markiona’s move pool while down and lets you focus your attacks a bit better.

Most of the fight is about understanding whether Markiona or her Arche Puppet are your primary threat and then tactically dodging or blocking the attacks that come from the appropriate party. You can usually just stay locked on to Markiona regardless of the current attacker, as the Arche Puppet’s attacks are pretty easy to learn and dodge with practice.

Even when out of sight, the puppet readying to attack is signaled by the strand turning red, with Markiona typically performing different motions with the arm that has her controller attached depending on the specific attack the Puppet will do, meaning it isn’t very hard to learn its telegraphs and patterns enough to dodge most of its attacks (as long as you have stamina to dodge).

At about 50% health, Markiona becomes more dangerous. Her move pool shifts a little, with her and her puppet now able to perform their Radiant Combos. The first of these seems guaranteed to occur shortly after she reaches 50% health, with additional uses of these dangerous combos happening infrequently afterward.

Markiona is vulnerable to Acid and the Decay status it inflicts. She’s also comparably weak to Overheat. As with the Tyrannical Predator, Markiona’s fight can be made much easier with Thrown Items, especially Carcass Body Fluid Bottles for ranged Acid damage and Shot Put to deal heavy stagger damage, potentially causing her hand device to malfunction or even giving you a chance to deal a Fatal Attack.

If you decide you want to try downing her puppet, the Queen’s Arche Puppet is fairly vulnerable to Shock and Acid. It resists Slash and Pierce attacks, taking extra damage from Strike attacks.
