Season 3 of Marvel Rivals has finally arrived. Unsurprisingly, Phoenix is the hero with the highest pick rate, as players are learning her kit and the best ways to use her. The new season has also brought many improvements, including reduced grind and more fun. Additionally, NetEase is finally cracking down on one of the biggest issues in the game.
The third season is off to a great start, and it’ll be interesting to see if the game developer can keep it up.
What is smurfing in Marvel Rivals and is it bannable?
With the release of Season 3, it appears that NetEase has finally decided to crack down on smurfs in Marvel Rivals. In short, smurfing is a process of creating new accounts to get easier opponents in ranked games. This is usually done by top-tier players, who start over fresh and go on incredible win streaks, climbing from Bronze to Grandmaster in just a few hours.
Earlier this year, the game developer added an option to report smurfs. Now, smurfs are receiving warnings.
The system has detected that you recently have been Smurfing. We urge you to cease this behavior immediately!
If you continue down this path, we will impose further penalties.

At the moment, it’s unknown what the punishment for smurfing is. However, considering how much this behavior disrupts competitive balance, even a first offense should result in at least a temporary suspension. NetEase may also consider stricter penalties, such as IP bans, to prevent repeat offenders from accessing the game.
Considering that smurfing has been one of the top player complaints since the game came out, it’s refreshing to see the game creator finally take it seriously. The roadmap for Marvel Rivals Season 3 promises even more amazing content coming to the game this month, and this content will certainly be more enjoyable with fewer smurfs.
