Build A Rocket Boy’s debut release MindsEye launched to terrible reviews and poor sales, resulting in the game’s quick entry into the bargain bin and unfortunate layoffs for the studio’s staff. 

Following the game’s poor release, studio boss Leslie Benzies – who was previously the lead on GTA V – blamed “internal and external saboteurs” on the failure of MindsEye as Glassdoor reviews of the company blame leadership. 

MindsEye boss blames everyone else 

Via IGN, Benzies blamed both internal developers and outsiders for the game’s high-profile failure in a video call to employees. Additionally, an email sent to Build A Rocket Boy and acquired studio PlayFusion informed workers that they were at risk of losing their jobs. 

In the same call, Benzies reportedly claimed that Build A Rocket Boy “would bounce back and relaunch MindsEye” when it’s ready, taking on player feedback for some much-needed improvement. 

MindsEye was just one part of the studio’s Everywhere project, a mature Roblox-like experience that consisted of multiple open-worlds that were linked together by portals. At the time of writing, Everywhere is seemingly still in development. 

Build A Rocket Boy’s MindsEye project hasn’t only players. In fact, actor Alex Hernandez, who plays the game’s protagonist Jason Diaz, revealed his “shared frustration” at the quality of the game in a recent interview. 

“To me, as a consumer and a gamer, there’s a shared frustration”, the actor said. “Like, why would you, as a company, release something that seemed to not be ready?”

“I don’t care who you are,” he continued. I don’t care if this is your first game or if it’s your hundredth game. If it’s glitchy, it’s glitchy.”

The layoffs at Build A Rocket Boy come at a rough time for the games industry. As we speak, thousands of developers have been let go from Microsoft with projects such as Everwild, Perfect Dark and the next MMO from Zenimax Online all scrapped.
