MTG Avatar The Last Airbender release date and latest news

MTG Avatar The Last Airbender release date and latest news

What is the MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender release date? The cat owl is out of the bag! Magic: The Gathering is officially getting an Avatar set as the final Standard release of 2025. Based purely on Nickelodeon’s original series The Last Airbender, it’ll follow the adventures of Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph in their mission to defeat Fire Lord Ozai. This guide tracks the release date, trailers, and latest news for the set.

For more details on this and the other big Magic events of the year, you should also check our complete MTG release schedule – and you can see a full history of all the game’s card collections in our list of all MTG sets in order.

Of course, if you haven’t been living under The Boulder for the last couple of months, this reveal may be no surprise to you. We’ve believed since early January that Avatar was likely to be the final MTG set in the calendar, thanks to a rather telling clue that was (of all places) spotted on the Daily Deals page on MTG Arena. Nonetheless, it’s good to have it officially confirmed, along with a release date.

MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender release dates

The Magic: The Gathering Avatar The Last Airbender set will be released worldwide on Friday, November 21, 2025. Wizards of the Coast announced the date in its initial reveal teaser trailer on February 21, 2025 – you can watch that below.

As usual, weekend Prerelease events at local game stores will start one week earlier on Friday, November 14 – so that’ll be your first chance to get your hands on the new cards.

Will Magic’s Avatar set release on MTG Arena?

Wizards has confirmed that MTG Avatar The Last Airbender will get a full MTG Arena release, alongside fellow Universes beyond set MTG Final Fantasy. The digital versions of Magic sets usually release a few days earlier than the full launch date.

That confirmation came in a statement on Monday, April 21, which – in a predictable but still rather strange development – also revealed that MTG Spiderman and any subsequent Marvel crossovers would not be making it to Arena in their full form.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man (as well as future Marvel sets) will not be coming to digital Magic platforms,” WoTC says in its announcement. “Instead, we will release our first Through the Omenpaths set on September 23. We’ll have more information on that set as we get closer to the release date.”

Unlike main-line Magic sets, the IP-blending Universes Beyond sets have mostly not been added in full to Arena (with the exception of the smash hit MTG Lord of the Rings set in 2023). But, given that Universes Beyond is being completely folded into mainstream Magic, with its cards now part of the Standard MTG format, we can expect more of these sets to get full digital counterparts (legal and licensing issues allowing, of course).

MTG Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer and news

The single, 30 second long, official MTG Avatar The Last Airbender trailer sadly tells us nothing specific about the set’s themes, mechanics, or cards.

Unsurprisingly, with months to go, and other UB releases like MTG Spiderman coming out sooner, we haven’t had any cards confirmed for the Avatar set just yet. But that leaves us free to speculate about what might be in this set, from reprints like Imprisoned in the Moon to creature types (obviously there’ll be a few Avatars), to mechanics.

Since Wizards confirms it’s directly based on the Nickelodeon animated series, we can be pretty confident that we’re getting at least one card each for:

  • Aang.
  • Sokka.
  • Katara.
  • Toph.

And I’d give good odds that we’ll see cards for other fan favorites like:

  • Sky Bison Appa.
  • Uncle Iroh.
  • Fire Lord Ozai.
  • Fire Lord Zuko.

An Avatar: The Last Airbender set also helps explain why Wizards of the Coast is releasing a MTG Spongebob Squarepants Secret Lair this year. That stuck out as a particularly odd announcement (and terrible fit for Magic) at the time, but now that we know Wizards was working on a deal with Nickelodeon for this release, all is suddenly made clear.

Story and mechanics

While the story background for MTG x Avatar is pretty clear (go watch the show on Netflix if you haven’t, and thank me later) predicting how the set’s mechanics will work is much tougher.

But that doesn’t stop us nerds from speculating! It’s going to be particularly interesting to see how Wizards of the Coast decides to split the four Avatar elements between the five MTG colors.

I could imagine the designers assigning a particular MTG color combo to each element (Rakdos for Fire, Gruul for Earth etc) but they might not go down this route at all – especially since the elements aren’t represented evenly in the plot: the Air Nomads are all wiped out before the Last Airbender story really begins.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an almost-universally beloved show, and I predict that some of those who have been immune to the charms of Universes Beyond so far will be won around, at least temporarily, by this release. Personally, it’s now the set on the MTG release schedule that I am most looking forward to. I want every single Zuko card, showing his transition from villain to hero.

The news of an Avatar x Magic: The Gathering set came just one day after a brand new series of Avatar was announced. Avatar: Seven Havens is a new 26-episode series set in a post-cataclysmic world where the Avatar is hunted as the world’s destroyer. And it’s due out in January 2026, less than two months after this set. Avatar fans are finally eating good!

Because I’m not sure where else I’d get the chance to do it, I’m also going to take the opportunity to recommend the Avatar: Live in Concert show, which I went to earlier this year. If you like Avatar, epic soundtracks, and the Secret Tunnel song, it’s a solid 10/10.

Products

While it’s far too early to see any officially confirmed products for Avatar The Last Airbender, we do know that it’s being treated as a full Standard legal set, which means we can confidently predict it’ll come with the usual, complete product line-up we’d expect from such a release.

That means we expect MTG x Avatar will have:

  • Play boosters (plus booster boxes and bundles), for Sealed Deck and Draft.
  • Collector boosters.
  • At least two Commander precon decks.
  • A prerelease pack.

Given Avatar’s popularity and its gorgeous, fan favorite art style and aesthetics, it’s likely we’ll see some spectacular tie-in accessories from third parties, too – I’ve got my eyes peeled for any awesome Avatar themed playmats, sleeves, and boxes. If there’s a furry Appa deck box, I’m going to cry.
