Grand Theft Auto 6 is delayed. After a year of hype leading up to its Fall 2025 release, the game has now been pushed to a May 2026 launch date. Many rumours claimed that GTA 6 would be pushed into next year and now reports claim Rockstar Games developers never believed the game would actually launch this year.

GTA 6 was never going to release in 2025

According to renowned journalist Jason Schreier, the majority of developers believed that the game would be delayed into 2026 while working on the game. According to developers, the delay seemed “inevitable” for months before the delay announcement.

“Nobody I’ve talked to at Rockstar has believed Fall 2025 was a real window for a very long time now,” Schreier said in a post on BlueSky. “Too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch. GTA VI slipping to 2026 has seemed inevitable for months if not longer.”

The delay of GTA 6 seemed inevitable for those even outside of Rockstar Games. Over the past decade, every game from the studio has seen a major delay prior to release, although the games typically release in an extremely polished state compared to other games.

Despite the delay until May 2026, there’s still not that much concrete information regarding the open world game. While we know it’s a dual-protagonist story inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, the vast majority of the upcoming crime drama is still very much a mystery, and that’s despite some major leaks.

Despite the major delay for GTA 6, publisher Take-Two Interactive still believes this year will be a record year for the company. With Borderlands 4 set to release alongside its usual slew of annual sports titles, the publisher does still have a few major releases. However, no launch will be as big as GTA 6, right?
