On Par With RX 7900 GRE And Slightly Slower Than GeForce RTX 5070

The China-exclusive Radeon RX 9070 GRE has been reviewed by multiple outlets. The GPU is equivalent to the previous-gen RX 7900 GRE in gaming performance.
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE Comes Out to be 5% Slower Than the RTX 5070 and About 15% Slower Than the RX 9070. Meanwhile, it ties with the RX 7900 GRE
AMD’s RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9070 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) has launched in China, a GPU that uses the same NAVI 48 die as the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT but has cut down specifications. Featuring 3072 Stream Processors and 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, the RX 9070 GRE was released to fill the gap between the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070.
The official reviews are out now, revealing the true potential of the GPU compared its bigger siblings. One review extensively compared the RX 9070 GRE to several GPUs from the current and last generation, including GPUs from both NVIDIA and AMD. The GPU showed similar behavior in most tests, coming out equivalent to the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, an RDNA 3-based GPU that was initially launched for China but was available worldwide later.

There isn’t much difference between the two, whether you consider the synthetic benchmarks or the gaming ones. However, when it comes to the specs, the RX 7900 GRE has a lead with an additional 4 GB VRAM, which can be a dealbreaker for many. Nonetheless, one shouldn’t forget that the RX 7900 GRE was launched at $549 while the RX 9070 GRE should be under $500, considering the RX 9070 is already at $549.
The surprise, however, comes when the RX 9070 GRE is compared to the RX 9070. We did expect the latter to be faster, but a performance difference of nearly 15% is quite big. Weirdly, the RTX 5070 wins over the RX 9070 GRE by just 5%, while we know the difference between the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 is hardly around 5%. This difference is probably due to the choice of games and applications, which we can analyze from the Expreview review, where in some cases the RX 9070 GRE comes out to be as fast as the RTX 5070, but in some cases, the latter can deliver up to 20% higher performance.

When compared to the RTX 5060 Ti, the RX 9070 GRE is 27% faster (and nearly 20-30% as per Expreview), which is a decent uplift, but keep in mind that the RX 9070 GRE isn’t its direct competitor. AMD will be releasing its RX 9060 XT GPU at Computex, which will be the one to go against RTX 5060 Ti and will be based on a slower NAVI 44 die.
