PlayStation Sells Less PS5 Consoles Than This Time Last Year While PSN Accounts Go Up

According to Sony’s financial results, released on Wednesday, 1.7 million fewer PS5 consoles have been sold over the first three months of 2025 when compared to 2024’s sales. However, there is some good news, as there are now six million more active PlayStation Network users since the same time period 12 months ago.

More Users, Less Console Sales

As the PS5 reaches its fifth year in November, sales have dropped since 2024’s earnings over the first three months of 2025, ending in March 31, according to Gematsu. The PS5 did have some major launches in the first three months of 2024, however. They include the following:

  • Tekken 8 made its grand splash on January 26 alongside Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
  • Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Persona 3 Reload launched in early February, giving PS5 gamers two big RPG adventures to start the year off
  • Helldivers 2 was a massive success for PlayStation, launching on February 8. It sold over 12 million copies in 12 weeks, according to Polygon.

2025 in comparison hasn’t had as much of a riveting start to the year, but it has received Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Civilization VII, and Wuthering Waves over the first three months.

Despite the lowering console sales, PS4 and PS5 software sales have gone up by 3.5 million units over the past year with 76.1 million copies of games sold in total for both platforms. 5.9 million of those are for first-party games, which has dropped significantly from Q1 2025’s 12.3 million units. Gematsu also reports that 80 percent of the software sales were from digital, which is up 3% over Q1 2024.

The Future of PlayStation

Many have said that the PS5 is PlayStation’s worst console generation so far, due to the lack of releases. This might be due to the cancellation of multiple games-as-a-service titles. The most notable is probably The Last of Us multiplayer game, which was cancelled due to the time commitment Naughty Dog would spend on keeping the title thriving. “To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games,” said Naughty Dog in an official blog post. “So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”

Astro Bot is arguably one of PlayStation’s best releases from the past few years, with multiple Game of the Year awards to its name.

Naughty Dog is currently developing a sci-fi adventure game called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Without a release date and each console generation usually lasting seven years, this is likely Naughty Dog’s first and only PS5 game. It has also launched remasters/remakes of The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2, but those began life on the PS3 and PS4.

Nevertheless, PS5 console sales will likely increase as 2025 continues. PlayStation is scheduled to release Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei later this year. In fact, Death Stranding 2 has now gone gold, meaning that the game is now being pressed onto discs after initial development has completed.
