PS6 to ‘Push the Boundaries’ of Video Game Graphics

An AMD exec recently shared their goals for Project Amethyst, the partnership between the tech company and PlayStation that focuses on innovating machine learning technology for gaming. As the PS5 has already seen improvements thanks to the effort, the PS6 will surely utilize what the two companies learn to bring a graphical experience that will “push the boundaries.”
AMD SVP & GM shares goals of PlayStation partnership
In a recent X post from AMD Computing & Graphics SVP and GM Jack Huynh the two core goals for Project Amethyst. The first is “Designing an architecture optimized specifically for machine learning workloads in gaming.” The second is “Developing high-quality neural networks that push the boundaries of real-time game graphics.”
Sony announced its Project Amethyst AMD partnership back in December 2024, which means we aren’t even a year into the “deeper collaboration.” Despite that, the collab already plans to improve the PS5 Pro by implementing FSR 4, AMD’s latest iteration of machine learning upscaling tech, to Sony’s enhanced console in 2026. As this is still a new partnership, it stands to reason that we would see many of these boundary-pushing technologies with the PS6.
“And this is just the beginning,” says Huynh in his post. “There’s enormous potential ahead, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far. The future of gaming is bright — and we’re just getting started.”
While there are certainly plans to release a PS6, it does seem that the next PlayStation generation is years away. In a recent statement from PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino, he acknowledged the interest in a new console. However, considering the PS4 still has a large active user base on top of the PS5’s, it seems Sony will continue a “multi-generational” approach.
