Sifu developer Sloclap’s brilliant football multiplayer game Rematch has launched to millions of players, but the game’s launch hasn’t been very smooth. Alongside missing crossplay on launch, Sloclap has admitted that its missed the ball on performance, netcode and a few other issues.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Sloclap explained that bringing crossplay to the hit multiplayer game is “top priority” for the game as player numbers cross the 3 million mark. Additionally, the studio is working on a tonne of improvements and new features for the game for the coming future.

Rematch crossplay is a “top priority”

Speaking to VideoGamer shortly after launch, Rematch creative director Pierre Tarno explained that the team were “hoping” crossplay would be ready by launch. Unfortunately, as the studio’s first ever cross-platform title on launch, bringing this feature to players was met with issues that the team has to fix.

“Yeah, that’s something we were hoping to have ready at launch, but we ran into some unexpected hurdles,” Tarno explained. “Since this is our first cross-platform title, it took more time than we anticipated to get everything aligned technically and on the production side.”

A version of crossplay is already functioning at the studio, but it still needs a lot of work. However, when the feature is ready, fans will be told immediately.

“It’s a top priority for the team,” the creative director explained. “We’ve already built a basic working version from a technical standpoint, but we need to implement the relevant interfaces, before debugging and polishing it, and finally passing console certifications successfully

“We want players to be able to team up no matter what platform they’re on, and we’re working hard to roll out crossplay as soon as possible. We’ll share an exact timeline as soon as it’s locked.”

A tonne of features are in the works

Alongside the upcoming crossplay and “improving netcode in all regions”, Sloclap has also teased a tonne of improvements coming to the game in general. Speaking to VideoGamer, Tarno explained that the studio has a tonne of exciting features planned for the title.

First and foremost, the team is planning to improve the “sliding tackle… goalkeeper mechanics…dripping system… wall contacts” and other core gameplay features.

“Our general objective is to keep adding depth and granularity to our mechanics, to make the game as interesting as possible in a competitive environment,” they explained. “As we move forward, we will deploy test servers so that we can try out new features and improvements in a live environment, in order to gather feedback from our community before deploying on the main game.”

Tarno finished by explaining that the team is also working hard on new features for both competitive and casual play with “AI-controlled bots” in the works for players to train against before jumping into multiplayer.
