Shadowheart actor begs Baldur’s Gate 3 fans not to play her as an origin character

Most people playing Baldur’s Gate 3 likely play through the massive CRPG as their Tav, a custom, blank-slate character that can be moulded however you want, but there are other options.
Baldur’s Gate 3 also allows players to pick any of the game’s beloved party members and play through the game as them. You can play through the entire game as Astarion, roleplaying as the suave vampire, or any of the other game’s party members. However, Shadowheart actor Jennifer English really doesn’t want you to play as her character.

Speaking to Fall Damage, English explained that players will miss out on almost all of her performance as you play through the game. Outside of some very minor occasions, origin characters don’t get to speak, despite how much time and effort their actors put into all of the reactions in-game.
English explained that playing Shadowheart as an origin character takes away a lot from the character, including some of her favourites. The actor notes that it’s a shame Origin players can’t hear iconic lines such as the iconic “God’s favourite princess” line.
However, she did note that some lines are still present such as the line in the character creator where lovely ‘ol Shart says: “My lady Shar tasked me with a mission of such secrecy that I surrendered great swathes of my memory in order to safeguard the knowledge of it.”
“It’s [during] the idle at the beginning, where you can possibly play as me – but don’t do that, because then you lose loads of my conversational dialogue,” she said (thanks, GR).
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with playing as origin characters. In fact, it’s a perfectly fun way to play, and there are unique lines for characters depending on who you’re playing as. Larian certainly put a tonne of work into playing the game this way, even it does mean you’re missing out on some incredible acting work.
