Sony Finally Announces a Game for Xbox, Surprising Everyone

It looks like hell has frozen over as Sony has announced a game for Xbox. In a first, a Sony-owned and funded IP is landing on a rival platform with Helldivers 2, and it’s out on Series X|S sooner than you think.
Sony-owned Helldivers 2 releases on Xbox this August
Arrowhead Game Studios has announced that Helldivers 2 will release on Xbox Series X|S on August 26. The hit shooter is a second-party game as Arrowhead itself is not owned by Sony but the IP is.
The only other instance we’ve seen of a Sony-funded IP landing on Xbox is Death Stranding. However, it’s worth noting that Sony sold the IP to developer Kojima Productions, who has long advocated for multiplatform releases.
It’s unclear if Sony plans to do something similar with Helldivers or not, but this is a different case than Death Stranding as Helldivers 2 is a multiplayer game. Sony has previously acknowledged that live service titles benefit from multiplatform releases. It’s why first-party multiplayer games are now expected to launch on PC day-and-date.
Currently, the only PlayStation-developed game that releases on Xbox platforms is MLB: The Show series, but Sony was strong armed into releasing the games on Xbox by IP owner MLB itself.
Bungie’s Marathon is also expected to launch on Xbox, but part of Bungie’s terms of agreement with Sony at the time of its acquisition was that its games will remain multiplatform — again, a different case.
