The best MTG Legendary Vehicles to use as your commander

With the latest batch of spoilers at MagicCon Vegas last week came some big changes for the ever popular MTG Commander format. Most importantly, all legendary vehicles can now go in the command zone (that’s right, Shorikia, Genesis Engine: you’re not so unique anymore!) And it begs the million dollar question: which vehicles should you play as your commander?
All 22 of the legendary vehicles Wizards of the Coast has printed over the years are now officially commander candidates. But just because you can make something your MTG commander, doesn’t mean you should. Many legendary vehicles are pretty garbage. It doesn’t help that most of them are colorless or mono-color, massively restricting what cards you can play.
We’re expecting the next MTG set – the grandiloquent space opera themed Edge of Eternities – to have plenty of interesting vehicles to fill the gap (and justify the rules change). Until that comes out, though, these are the best vehicle commanders you can play.
Golden Argosy
A five colored Golden Argosy could be one of the best blinkin’ commanders in the TCG, but being restricted to colorless makes it a pretty brutal deckbuilding challenge instead. There are some good options, like Circuit Mender and Solemn Simulacrum, but your go-to big colorless creatures, the Eldrazi, have built-in limitations that make them rubbish for blinking. The fact your creatures come in tapped is also a bit of a bummer!
RMS Titanic
It’s insurance fraud, the commander! I can see a lot of people making a joke deck out of this one. You just need to buff the RMS Titanic up as much as possible, then fling it to its death and make a stupid number of treasures. You’ll need cards like Reckless Fireweaver to actually win, however. Relying on all your excess mana seems like a bad play, since you’ll need to pay six to rebuild the good ship, and the costs only go up from there.
Esika’s Chariot
One of the best MTG vehicle cards full stop, Esika’s Chariot would certainly work nicely as a green tokens commander, its effect encouraging you to find some really massive tokens you can play. However, this card is obviously better suited to a 1v1 beatdown sort of strategy, and unless you can give the chariot evasion or indestructibility, attacking in the late game may become a challenge.
The Last Ride
You aren’t crewing this artifact unless you’re already close to death, but The Last Ride could still do work as a ‘Greed if you squint a little’ in the command zone. A one-mana commander is hard to hate, and maybe you can make this into some ‘live fast, die fast’ kind of deck, that wants to burn through its life total as quickly as possible – very on theme.
The Indomitable
I’ll take a Coastal Piracy in the CZ. The Indomitable looks like a pirates commander, but I think it’s actually meant for a fliers deck, as there’s plenty of overlap between these two themes. Throw in a vehicles subtheme, and there’s plenty of options when building this deck, despite the color restriction. I also always love a commander that can come back from the dead if you jump through some hoops.
Jackdaw
A far superior Izzet boat compared to The Belligerent, Jackdaw is an awesome commander with a clear game plan. You need to cram in as many artifacts as possible, to turn its effect from a disaster, to a neat wheel, to an ungodly amount of draw. Being one of the few decent two-color options available boosts this higher up the list.
The Falcon, Airship Restored
This new card is actually pretty good in EDH, making me think it was probably designed with the rules change in mind. The Falcon, Airship Restored makes for a very straight laced reanimator commander with no bells or whistles, but one that’s pretty effective. Simply shove some big creatures in your graveyard, then bring them back to life.
Because your commander is so resilient – low cost, only a creature on your turn, and with a built in self-reanimate power, you don’t even really need backup reanimators in the deck. You do get a bit hosed by flying blockers, however.
Are you jazzed to try building EDH decks around some of these magnificent flying, sailing, driving, and cat machines? Or have we missed out the best vehicle commander to try out? Let us know by joining the discussion in the Wargamer Discord community!
