The Best Superheroes Who Deserve Their Own Game

The Best Superheroes Who Deserve Their Own Game

In the world of superhero games, we often get the favorites of Marvel and DC getting their time in the spotlight. The Batman: Arkham series is a monumental success with terrific combat and stellar storytelling that takes us into the gritty underbelly of Gotham.

We also have the spectaclar (see what I did there?) Spider-Man series from Insomniac Games that offers up an explorable New York with incredible web-slinging and combat abilities. It is time, however, to give some new heroes a spotlight with their own game.

Rogue

A Southern Belle Ready to Kick Ass

Rogue from the X-Men
Rogue in Disney’s X-Men ’97.

With how popular this X-Man is in the Marvel fan community, it’s surprising that Rogue hasn’t had her own game yet. She has super-strength, the ability to fly, and she can take her opponents’ abilities by touching them. There’s all sorts of levels you could come up with for Rogue, and with her sassy dialogue, you could really make an Uncharted-like adventure with her. With the emergence of the X-Men coming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, it would be a great idea to make a Rogue game sooner rather than later.

She’d sure be a lot more interesting than Wolverine, but that’s probably a hot take. The idea of a Wolverine game sounds derivative from games we’ve had in the past, and it’s a shame Insomniac Games’ next project is based on the Albertan.

Storm

A Storm Is Coming!

Another X-Man who would be fantastic as a solo character in her own game is Storm. She has powerful abilities that have her reign down lightning on her opponents. Her movement through the sky would be fun to utilize as you explore an open world landscape. She would also bring a unique African-American perspective into the superhero genre.

It was great to see Miles Morales’ culture in his own game from Insomniac Games, so why not Storm? Her moveset in Marvel vs. Capcom shows that she would be a strong main character. She can blow foes away with her wind attacks and combo her moves with electrifying flair. She could also utilize ice powers to freeze her opponents on the spot.

Hawkeye

He Never Misses

Hawkeye would be a fun character to play as in a video game, and Horizon: Zero Dawn proves it. Hawkeye’s bow and arrow would be sick to use, and Hawkeye could use a suite of different gadgets to help him in battle. You could have him go on a spy adventure to stop HYDRA or head off on an open world adventure that has him go on undercover missions.

Once again, you could have an Uncharted-like quest with witty banter alongside the likes of Mockingbird or Black Widow. You could also have a personal story of doubt as he tries to co-exist with the super-powered heroes of the world like Hulk and Captain America, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Would a Hawkeye game sell well, however? It depends on how you market it. He could be gaming’s next Nathan Drake.

Black Widow

A Shadowy Past

Similar to Hawkeye, Black Widow would be an exciting choice for a superhero game. You could have the nuanced melee combat of the Batman: Arkham series mixed with super-spy gadgets. It could be like the much-missed Splinter Cell series, in which you try to take on missions stealthily.

Ubisoft could develop the game and base it off the amazing parkour of the Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia franchises. It would be a striking third-person action adventure title with a mature storyline that tackles Black Widow’s haunted past. There’s plenty of potential for a game with Natasha Romanoff as the main protagonist. Her combat in Marvel’s Avengers from Square Enix shows she can be a fun playable character for fans of superhero games.

Ant-Man

Growing Small and Large

Ant-Man was popularized in the MCU movies, even if his last movie wasn’t that great.

Can you list off how many comedic superhero games are out there? One, two? There simply aren’t enough out there in the market right now. Ant-Man could help resolve that with fun quips and interesting scenarios from growing small and big. One game that proves there’s potential in such a concept is funnily the 3D platformer Astro Bot. In the level Downsize Surprise, the developer Asobi Studio made a thrilling showcase for how such a game could work.

In the level, you shrink into small holes, and you see creatures become larger than life when you grow tiny. You can also scurry around in a bed, scaring enemies in the level. You could find all manner of collectibles by growing small as Ant-Man. Funnily enough, Knack also shows how you could have exciting boss fights as the titular protagonist grows to a ginormous size. Perhaps, there could even be a Pikmin-like mechanic, in which you’re commanding the ants around the hero. At first, you wouldn’t think an Ant-Man game would be that enticing, but after more thought, it would be absolutely terrific.

Harley Quinn

Bats Shouldn’t Have All the Glory

Harley Quinn should have a solo game.

You can take many routes with Harley Quinn as the main character of a video game. The DC animated series Harley Quinn shows a comedic side of the character, and in video game form, you could explore a goofier side of Gotham we’ve never seen before in an interactive medium. However, you could also get into a grittier side of the complex villain/anti-hero.

She could wield a gun, a bat, and all manner of weapons as she acrobatically moves around each level. While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn’t the best received, it sets the foundation of how her character would play in a solo title as she daringly flies into the sky and combos foes with her satisfying bat attacks. She was arguably the most entertaining character out of the lot. Tara Strong also kills it as the character every time she steps into the role.

Harley Quinn is a playable character in the Injustice fighting game series.

The Super-Sons

A Dynamic Duo

Super Sons would be a great video game team up
Super Sons would be a great co-op video game.

The Super-Sons, Robin and Superboy, would make for a riveting kids adventure for co-op play. It would play similarly to the LEGO games with puzzles to solve along the way. Additionally, the combat could play like the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games with co-op moves that can be used between each other. It would be a fun family game that would have plenty of comedy moments, which is something that the gaming industry is missing in today’s landscape.

It could feature a brighter art style too as the Super-Sons explore the brighter side of the DC universe. The Super-Sons comics are absolutely delightful, as the two teenage superheroes play off each other so well, and deserve their own adaptation of some kind.
