CD Project Red has announced one more major update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ten years after its initial release. As a swansong update to the beloved RPG after its free next-gen update, the studio is adding cross-platform mod support for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
Announced in a recent press release and social media post, CDPR confirmed that the game will not benefit from a “shared modding ecosystem” that will allow mods to be present cross all platforms. However, certain limitations apply.
The Witcher 3 mods on console
In the announcement, CDPR explained that “for the first time, creating, sharing, and enjoying mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be easier and more accessible than ever”. Coming “later this year”, the RPG will be able to connect with mod.io on PC and console to download as many free mods as they want.
Of course, limitations do apply for mods on console. While CDPR did not specifically state this, PS5 games with mod support are more limited than Xbox due to Sony’s refusal of adding unique assets, an issue Xbox gamers don’t have in games like Fallout 4, Skyrim and ARMA Reforger.
“Many mods will be available across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5,” the developer explained. “However, due to specific content guidelines and selection criteria for each platform, it may not be possible to bring every mod uploaded on PC to console. Mods available on mod.io must also adhere to our Fan Content Guidelines and CD PROJEKT RED User Agreement.”
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt cross-platform mod support not only supports mods created via the game’s REDKit mod tools, but also through other means. However, on console, any mod that makes use of scripts is required to use CDPR’s own tools.
As a game that’s already a decade old, nobody expected this type of functionality to come to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but it will be an awesome addition whenever it lands. Hopefully, we’ll also see this become standard for all future CDPR games as well.
