This is a list detailing vital tips and tricks to improve your Death Stranding 2 playthrough.
From the map changes to the spontaneous weather events, PEAK gives you numerous ways to die. But it also offers several ways and routes to ensure you stay alive (even if you’re not conscious) until you reach that glorious helicopter to escape.

Thoroughly Loot the Shore
Don’t Miss Early Items
When you first awaken on the Shore, don’t rush off. There’s excitement on your first (or even tenth) game to want to climb ASAP, but the starting area is loaded with goodies. For instance, you can discover a suitcase that can contain one or two useful items.
You can also scale the nearby trees and nab coconuts, getting an early start on food management. It pays to be as prepared as possible before hitting the first ascent, so turn over every rock. Just watch out for Sea Urchins as they cause poison. Also, always remember to grab the most important item: Bing Bong.
9
Cook (Almost) Everything
Everything Works Better When Warmed
One of the best tricks to use in PEAK is the cooking feature. Granted, you can cook everything, but you should cook consumables. When cooked, their effectiveness increases. This is more obvious with food. You can even plan to cook before you climb using the fire burning at the crash site. It’ll give you a nice boost at the start.
But also consider cooking things like bandages. It’ll give you a minor bump in stamina, and even the smallest bit helps. Just don’t cook tools like the rope. They’ll just break instead. Remember that campsite fire will burn out. If you find a portable stove, you can drop that down anywhere there’s a flat surface. Or even the hot rocks in the Caldera biome can be used to cook consumables.

Ancient Luggage Will Hurt
Some Payments Require Blood
Loot is everything in PEAK, especially Ancient Luggage. This luggage contains mythical or rare items that will always come in handy in some way during your climb. This can include the following:
Ancient Effigy |
Either revives every dead player or gives a magical item if no one’s dead. |
---|---|
Bugle of Friendship |
When blown, all nearby players get unlimited stamina for 10 seconds. |
Faerie Lantern |
Heals everyone in a certain radius (can even protect from the cold). |
Pandora’s Lunchbox |
Initially wipes your statuses clean (e.g. remove poison, hunger), but then generates a random effect. Could be negative or positive. |
As you can tell, it’s one of the most useful luggage, but it’s also rather rare to find. Just make sure whoever opens it has good health. Opening the Ancient Luggage will give you roughly eight brute damage.
7
Unconsciousness isn’t a Death Sentence
Not Yet at Least
So, the worst has finally happened. You ran out of stamina before you could reach the top, landing roughly at the bottom. You ate the wrong thing, and now you’re drowsy. Or maybe you slipped on a banana peel thrown by your friend, or worse, got shot with a blowgun. Well, now you’re unconscious, but not dead yet.
Your friends have time to save you. As long as they give your unconscious form a piggyback ride, that is. Players can climb with another on their back, ensuring you hold on until help can be found until your team stumbles upon Cure-All, a medkit, etc. Or maybe you just need time to wake back up. Either way, just know that it’s not an immediate death sentence.
6
There’s Poison Nearly Everywhere
Not All Food is Safe Food
It’s not just the fall that can cut your ascent short. A main tip to keep in mind is that poison can wreck you in PEAK. In most cases, minor bouts of poison will ease away without intervention. But a good helping of poison marks you for death if you’re not careful. It takes up your health and stamina, so it’s important to either have time to rest up or find a cure.
And you can be poisoned almost everywhere. There are poisonous foods, ticks that will send constant poison until removed (or upon your death), and even Gassy Bushes that explode on contact, sending out poisonous fumes.
5
Learn the Ins and Outs of Stamina
You’re Dead Without It
Stamina is probably your most important stat in PEAK. There’s no climbing without it. There are numerous items like the energy drink that can increase your stamina and even add an extra bar of energy. Just know that the bar should be reserved for emergencies because it can come in clutch in the worst situations.
You can maintain your stamina by understanding where to climb. Finding flat surfaces, no matter how small, are key to recovering during a long climb. Climbing sideways or just walking drains your stamina much slower, as does using things like vines and chains.
4
Weigh the Pros and Cons of the Backpack
It’s Not Always Best to Wear One
The backpack is another helpful item. It can hold an additional four items, making it key for carrying backup food or important items you don’t plan to use until later. On the negative end, every item has weight. The more weight you add, the less stamina you have. So, if you’re going to wear one, be prepared to adjust.
Additionally, you cannot currently look in the backpack without setting it down. There’s a chance that you’ll drop the backpack on a surface that’s not as flat as you thought, and before you know it, it’s rolling down the mountain. Or maybe into a pit of lava. If you’re with a team, let someone else dig through the pack while it’s on. For solo climbing, just get to flat land first.
3
Plan Your Route Carefully
Look for Safe Areas
There’s no one way to climb, so it doesn’t hurt to take a minute to figure out which way to go. Look for ledges, ropes, chains, and more. These can provide a safety net while you’re climbing, especially if you run out of stamina at the last moment.
Another good reason to plan ahead is that you can scout out potential hazards. Running into a Gassy Bush can take out the whole team if you’re not careful. Plus, understand how the elements can impact your climb. Whenever it rains, for instance, the mountain is too slippery to get a good grip. So, hold off until it stops.
2
Keep an Eye on the Fog
It’s Closer Than You Think
There’s always the concern about the fog, which you’ll get a warning about every time it comes closer. If you get caught up in the fog, it will cause steady cold damage. Stay in it for minutes at a time, and there’s a good chance you’ll freeze to death.
The key here is to find something warm to loiter by if you have to stay in the fog. Or you can simply tough it out. The damage is extremely slow, so you may make it out of the fog before it really hurts. Either way, don’t test your luck too much as the fog can still claim your life if you’re stuck in it.
1
Learn About the Climbing Assists
Ropes and Chains Aren’t All the Same
One of the greatest things about PEAK is that you don’t have to rely only on your hands to climb. The trick is to use every climbing aid possible. Pitons are perfect to place down and hold onto if you run out of stamina while climbing and can’t make it to a surface just yet. Rope cannons shoot a hook that drops a rope you can climb with. Even chain cannons are wonderful at getting you across gaps.
There are environmental items that assist too. Sometimes crossing vines is better than focusing purely on the mountain, for instance. Or you can swing from the chains already laid out. Keep a sharp eye out for anything that can save you stamina and lower your risk of falling.
