With the Steam Summer Sale now gone and past after ravaging our wallets once again, every destitute PC gamer is looking for some sick freebies. Thankfully, a brilliant 3D sci-fi strategy game is 100% off on Valve’s PC gaming marketplace, and it plays great on Steam Deck.

Following the Steam Summer Sale, game developer Black Lab Games made its Battlestar Galactica strategy game completely free to own on Steam for a limited time.

Originally released in 2017, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock puts you in command of the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. You’ll have to design and build ships, then take them to the 3D battlefield as you fight to protect the Twelve Colonies against the alien menace.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock free on Steam

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is free on Steam right here until July 17, 2025.

“Take control of the Colonial Fleet from the bridge of the mobile shipyard, Daidalos, and free the Twelve Colonies from the Cylon threat,” the game’s description reads. “Build your fleets, protect the Quorum alliance and prepare to dig deeper into the conspiracies of this heroic conflict.”

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock currently sits with a Very Positive rating on Steam, and is Steam Deck Playable. The game has partial controller support, but there’s plenty of community mappings that make the game a joy to play on Valve’s handheld.

Additionally, the real-time action is pause-able at any time, which is a fantastic option for all players, but especially handy for those on a controller. Personally, I find a lot of strategy games – especially 3D ones – finicky to play on the Deck, but this is a somewhat smoother experience than most.

In my experience, Battlestar Galactica Desdlock is a pretty great fit for Steam Deck, and infinitely more playable on the handheld than Sins of a Solar Empire. (Although, that game’s Halo-themed Sins of the Prophets is so good that the clunk doesn’t matter.)

As for why the strategy game is free right now, there’s no official explanation. However, as with any strategy game, there’s a sizeable collection of DLC, and it’s all on sale right now. Put two and two together?
