SCP (Secure, Contain, Protect) is a thoroughly unique franchise. A long-running community project, the ongoing horror series allows anyone to make their own projects in the universe with the correct accreditation, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn developer Owlcat Games wants in.
Speaking to VideoGamer ahead of the release of Rogue Trader’s brilliant new Lex Imperialis DLC, which adds 15 hours of story content alongside new mechanics and a party member to the main campaign, executive producer Anatoly Shestov revealed that his actual dream project is actually to make a big budget SCP game.
Rogue Trader devs want to make an SCP game
In an upcoming episode of the VideoGamer Podcast, our regular developer interview series, Shestov explained that he would love to get Owlcat to work on an SCP video game sometime in the future.
After just celebrating the studio’s 9th birthday, Shestov explained that he would like to see a number of things happen within Owlcat in the next 9 years. “One thing that I would like the studio to proceed is our own franchise and the other thing I want our studio to proceed is 100% open editor or the game that we release somehow in the future.”
However, while Shestov wants Owlcat to create an original franchise without any reliance on other company’s IPs, he also wants to take a stab at the SCP franchise with the studio’s high-quality writing, RPG mechanics and more.
“Me personally, I always want to make a game based on a SCP universe, like Secure, Contain and Protect,” Shestov said. “It has a pretty unusual license, and it’s an open community. I doubt this will actually happen, but some child inside me without this burden… this child is clapping its hands right now because that’s a brilliant idea, he thinks.”
This doesn’t mean that Owlcat will ever get to make Shestov’s dream SCP game, but it would be incredible to see. There’s a tonne of games and fan projects out there, but none have ever been made by established studios. Maybe, one day, we could see AA or even AAA games in the series, but it does seem unlikely.
