Yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 Karlach actor is aware of just how much fan-fiction you’ve all been writing

Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is a fantasy story filled with loss, love, and Bear-filled romance scenes. With the game’s mature vibe, the game’s fanbase has shipped every character with every other character, so much so that Halsin Dave Jones has addressed the constant shipping.

In a recent interview, Karlach actor Samantha Béart, who goes by she/they pronouns, confirmed that they’re very aware of just how much shipping and fan fiction is available on the internet regarding not just her character, but every BG3 character.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Béart explained that she’s seen all of the “filthy” stories that fans have created for her character on websites like AO3 and others. While the actor hasn’t read the stories, their existence is well known.

In the interview, Béart confessed that she knows “all the filthy things people write about” her character. “I don’t read it, but I am aware,” the actor told the outlet. “Because I’m a person and I am on the internet.”

Nevertheless, the actor explained that Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a “completely life-changing” experience, despite the filth written on AO3. “Most of that is down to the fans,” they said. £And they are fans, they’re not always players, actually: they’re fans of narrative… and they have learned a CRPG and a [D&D] 5e system because they want to experience our stories, and that is quite a compliment.”

At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 has a total of 39,788 stories on AO3, one of, I assume, many fanfic websites. Of that number, there’s 8,213 stories involving Karlach (and 22,925 involving Astarion). When searching explicitly for explicit stories, Karlach is the top of the pops with the Tiefling accounting for 5,347 stories (Astarion drops to second place here with Astarion stories).

It’s unsurprising to see just how hungry for thirsty literature Baldur’s Gate 3 fans truly are. After all, the game did become much bigger once gamers found out they could get down with a man who transforms into a bear.

As for Béart’s career since BG3, the actor and others have explained that the game’s success hasn’t actually bolstered their careers at all. However, the fan fervour to meet their favourite characters has caused all of the main party cast members to be flooded with fans at conventions, which is its own level of success.

In terms of the game’s future, Larian doesn’t have anything else major planned for Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, the studio is working on two new games simultaneously, backed by its new storytelling department in Guildford, England.
