How to play Truth or Dare

Playing Truth or Dare is super easy, even if dealing with the potential embarrassment of a spicy truth or ridiculous dare can ramp up the tension fast! Here’s how to get a game started:

  1. Get some friends together – ideally folks you know well, but not so well that you already know all their dirtiest secrets.
  2. Sit in a rough circle – so everyone knows whose turn is next.
  3. Start playing – each player, in turn, gets asked: Truth or Dare?
    1. If they pick Truth, either the group as a whole, or the player who went last, asks them one of our questions above, and they must answer honestly, or perform a forfeit.
    2. If they pick Dare, it’s the same – but they must perform a Dare, or face a forfeit if they refuse to try.
  4. Play as long as everyone’s having fun – there’s no scoring or winning in Truth or dare; the game just keeps going until most players want to stop (maybe you’re getting bored, or it’s time to head to the club). The key thing is to wrap things up before anyone stops having fun.

Top tips for a successful Truth or Dare night

We’re a bit old and boring these days, and spend more time playing Magic: The Gathering and painting miniatures than we do spilling truths over drinks – but we played more than our share of Truth or Dare in college, and as seasoned game analyzers, we’ve got some useful tips you should follow to have the best possible game:

  • Read the room – Truth or Dare is a game about making each other a bit uncomfortable, that’s the fun of it – but there’s a fine line between breaking down barriers with your friends, and making people mad, sad, or freaked out. Especially if you’re the party host, be mindful of how good a time everyone’s having, and wade in politely if you think it’s necessary to keep the whole group having fun.
  • Consider the couples – Couples are great for Truths, as they know where all each other’s bodies are buried, and can unearth the most entertaining stuff. But they can make things boring when it comes to spicy dares – where’s the fun in forcing people to kiss someone that’s already their partner? Consider using house rules to make sure couples don’t lean on each other to avoid their duty to the game!
  • Set no-go areas if necessary – A game where everyone’s expected to spill their deepest secrets, even embarrassing ones, can occasionally touch on topics or areas that are particularly sensitive for certain players, or could even bring up traumatic memories. As the host, if you’re already aware of risks like that, think of a way to introduce a house rule that avoids it coming up, without ‘outing’ the person – there’s no shame in having a banned topics list. It might sound over-cautious, but we’ve had some rough moments like this in the past, and everyone’s there to have fun – so think about it.
