Assassin’s Creed Shadows Tops 5 Million Players, Performs ‘In Line with Expectations’

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has now topped an impressive-sounding 5 million players, according to Ubisoft, having launched back in March.
But of course, player count does not necessarily equal total sales, and so there’ll always be arguments over how many copies Shadows has actually shifted. Unfortunately, Ubisoft simply doesn’t seem to deal in that metric these days (because players is always going to be a higher total).
Still, Shadows has apparently performed “in line with expectations”; that’s what the publisher writes in its Q1 sales report.
It also suggests that the open world title should have long legs, thanks to ongoing support through updates and its upcoming Claws of Awaji expansion. It’ll be hoping that these kinds of additions bring both new and returning players to the title over time.
Still, it’s difficult to shake the feeling that Shadows hasn’t hit quite as hard as Ubisoft would have wanted. “In line with expectations” is all well and good, but we can’t forget that its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, remains the company’s most profitable ever release.
Having said that, Shadows remains one of the best-selling games of 2025 in the US, based on dollar sales data. Make no mistake, this game’s made Ubisoft a lot of money — but we’d be surprised if it comes close to equalling Valhalla’s success.
